| Hopkins started well but went into Judo mode for second half of the fight.
Milked a low blow for all it was worth as well.
He was hanging on from round 8 onwards I think.
Even allowing for the knockdown I had Calzaghe by a couple of points.

Yeah, not that surprising to me either. Think John Rawling and Richie Woodhall fell into the trap of giving rounds to Hopkins purely for the fact that they thought the judges would favour Hopkins being the home fighter if you know what I mean?
He may have been the home fighter, but you can't win a big fight like that doing as little as Hopkins did IMO. Anyone who takes 2 minutes to recover from the softest low blow I've ever seen deserves exactly what he got.

| Classic Hopkins really. Only one person wanted to fight there and that's got to be how Chuck Giampa saw it to come up with a 6-point gap.
Joe Cortez.... Get rid. He's a Golden Boy ref who allows the Golden Boy fighter to do what he wants.

| Listened to it on Radio 5 live and was slightly confused by the guy describing the action sounding like it was all Calzaghe then Duke "I know I'm a three weight world champion but I'm as daft as a brush" Mackenzie would say how much Hopkins was on top.... I decided to watch the fight for myself on HBO with Manny Stewart et al and yes they had him winning 116 - 111 quite rightly so, Hopkins was defensively great but didnt do anything really except hold and look for the odd right hand. Duke seemed to have difficulty seeing the fight properly with his head so far up BHops BHole

I listened to 5live as well and was convinced by their comments that Hopkins had won comfortably, very odd commentry, Mckenzie seemed to have Calzaghe behind by at least 2/3 rounds.

| Quote: Shameless "Watching the Hopkins interview it's hard to believe he lost. Not a mark on his face. Looks like he's just done a 30 minute training session with Dwaine Chambers. For me Hopkins made more impact in that fight, although Joe landed more technical hits.
Calzaghe, you are one lucky if hard working barstard.'"
Agree 100%, although Hopkins spent most of the fight cheating, Calzagie spent his time tip-tapping away to a points decision akin to and ameture fight.
Both fighters are cr@p and gave poor entertainment.
Roy Jones will smash Calzagie easily...

| Wouldn't want to see him take on Roy Jones as he's another who's way past his best IMO and beating a past it Jones would be no better than beating a past it Hopkins.
The fight I'd like to see Joe take would be Kelly Pavlik, someone who's a big puncher and in his prime. If Joe were to come through a fight like that with his unbeaten record intact, then that would more than cement his legacy IMO.

Well said, Cortez was a joke. Unbelieveable scenes as to many parts of the fight and the word farce was certainly coming into mind.
Great victory for Calzaghe though, talk about being up against it but he still pulled it out the bag. Hopkins was as expected, ran away from Joe for 12 rounds and did nothing coming forward apart from a lucky knock down early in the 1st.
Some great moments though, one when Hopkins ran away and hid behind the ref and two when Calzage signed to be giving it Hopkins up the ar[is[/ie after he feigned another low blow.

| Must admit, I'm surprised by some of the gaps in the scoring. I had Calzaghe by a few points, but a six-point gap seemed a bit much for me.
Must agree on Cortez. I don't think he realises that we're not tuned in to watch him. When a referee is introduced with his own tag-line, you know it's gone too far. Hopkins didn't want to fight and he knew the referee would defend him if it ever looked in danger of turning into a brawl.

| There's not much Cortez could have done but deduct a point, and it wouldn't have stopped Hopkins holding anyway. The criticism he received from the Mayweather/Hatton fight may have been on his mind too.
Anyway, he wouldn't want to tarnish his HBO given repuation as ‘firm but fair’. I remember a time when referees were seen and not heard...

I think his legacy is secure over here with British fight fans, however he needs to become 'The Legend Killer' for him to have a universal legacy.
