The referee's indecision is final:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_3738.gif

generally the 80s was a time english football fans would like to forget with the bradford fire, the hesyl stadium and of course hillsborough. add to this falling attendances, ramshackle stadia, and terrace violence and things had to change which they did with new, safer grounds and a premier league.
tragedy was that it took several disasters to force the changes

we remember all those who perished in these horrible events

I think it's to do with the way hillsbrough was policed? Although I could be way off the mark with that.

sorry, took it the wrong way,

we firmly believe that the police were at fault for the disaster by not managing the volume of the crowd correctly and by opening a gate to allow fans to flood through into an already overcrowded section of the leppings lane end. there were spaces on either side of the terrace but the middle section was packed. also a succession of home secretaries have ignored our plea for an independant public enquiry into the events surrounding the disaster.

Quote: shandy swiller "unfortunately it was the hooligans of the 70s/80s that led to this. clubs had to cage supporters in as if they were wild animals and something like this was always going to happen. RIP to the 96 who died and yes there should be some memorial at the ground remembering these'"

Actually, it was the neglect of clubs like Sheffield Wednesday in not keeping the terraces safe. Crash barriers were either missing or so dilapidated they buckled and collapsed under the pressure. If the ground had been properly maintained and the police hadn't just herded everyone into the centre pen rather than ensuring people got to the others as well, then the disaster could well have been averted. The authorities should've known something was likely to happen, ask any United fan who was stood on that Leppings Lane terrace just a few months previously what they thought of the state of the place. Unfortunately the authorities didn't think football fans were deserving of human rights and allowed places like Hillsborough to get into such a sorry, unsafe state.

It could've happened to anyone, which is something that a lot of people today should remember.

The fact that 96 people went to a football match full of excitement and expectation and ended up dying is a horrible tragedy and something that every football fan of a certain age will remember vividly.

But where's the memorial to the recently dead of the Ivory Coast? Where's the Bradford fire memorial? Heysel? Ibrox?

Nah, let's just forget those disasters and instead focus on the billionth remembrance of the Hillsborough tragedy.

Justice for the families of the 96 who died. A proper independent inquiry into the tragedy, so that the authorities in question are held accountable for these deaths, and the real truth can be published for all to see.

96 friends gone but not forgotten. YNWA

So the 20th anniversary of the Bradford fire was also given a memorial thread on rlfans? The Ivory Coast tragedy happened less than two weeks ago, but that thread seems to be missing.

Just read the whole of the contrast website, excellent site and source of information it is.
What a terrible tragedy, R.I.P to all the deceased.

I appreciate what you're saying but I never understand why people make this point. The fact that other people have suffered in similar circumstances does not make it any less significant on this occasion.

As has been noted above, it could have happened to any set of supporters, particularly in that ground. I'm going to a football match tonight - crazy to think I might not come back because of something that happened at the ground.

It's inexplicable if there has never been an independent enquiry. Inexplicable.
