must admit it was sweet when Man U got relegated - even better that it was Denis the Menace who sent them down

It's the comedy factor. Liverpool also do it which you have admitted. Think before you post. Most teams do it about their rivals, you just give us more ammo than most.

yeah, the worst case scenario for Utd with their fate not being in their hands - just goes to show just how bad that squad really was - they went down with games to spare !
I recall the Spurs game at WHL in '73 with Besty scoring, you could smell the gin as he ran past with the goal celebrations - was that his last ever Man U goal ? ( can't recall being nearly 40 years ago, where have the years gone FFS ?)

| Decent game at Goodison, but a completely farcical performance from the referee. Absolutely awful decisions, why football can't swallow it's pride and just have a video referee is beyond me. Two perfectly good goals ruled out by clueless officials. The offside I don't mind too much, shocking decision, a foot onside, but at least there were bodies in motion to confuse things. But the ball over the line was an absolutely horrendous decision. You could clearly see from the front on angle that the ball bounced with clear grass in front of it and the referee would have seen it as he would have been watching the clearance. He's got to give it. He bottled it, then farcially realised he'd messed up when he stopped Newcastle breaking 3 on 1 on Howard because he knew it was a goal.

You work out a proper system where video refs can adjudicate without completely messing up the flow of play and I think there's a chance that they will accept video refs.
Until that can be worked out though, I don't think VR's will stand a chance of being brought into football. And I suspect that it's virtually impossible to do it.

That's tbe reason I always give when asked. Decisions have to be instant and if they aren't then it can't be done.
Hopefully the hawkeye or goal ref system will come in.

As soon as the ball crosses the line and triggers the magic, an air horn goes off and everybody goes wild. Now surely if we can do just about anything with technology these days, surely it can't be so hard to create some sort of technology to track something crossing a line? I don't believe for one minute it's impossible and I definitely believe goal line technology can be made without the need of a VR.
Also, maybe it's just me, but how much flow in the game is there, really? The authorities quite happily see the game regularly stopped for a minute or so for set pieces, throw ins (Stoke), goal kicks and players feigning injury. Would it really be so bad to see the game stopped for fifteen seconds to see a replay of something that could completely decide the outcome of the game? Surely if we're concerned about the flow of the game, we should look to remove the consistent crap we get every game that wastes time, rather than prevent something potentially pivotal to helping the game?

| I don't disagree about the goal line tech. And I think they are trialing some of those systems at the moment.
But penalty decisions where the ball is still in play are going to the major problem. Attacking sides are going to be screaming for the video ref, the defending side will probably be breaking. There's going to be huge doubt while no one knows what's going on. The ref in the middle is going to stop making pen decisions because he won't want to give one when it's not.
And then, even if we do get line and pen technology players are going to be pushing for throw in decisions to revert to the video ref.
TBH I hope VR's do come to football because I do approve of them. But I can understand the difficulty of implementing them. And I do think that there is far more of a grey area when it comes to football penalties than there is over RL tries.

VR decisions being made during open play obviously wouldn't work, but I don't think we can just accept things the way they are now. Maybe technology isn't the answer, but maybe getting more referees is? One in each half? An assistant for each side in each half? IMO, if a referee can get closer to play and get a better angle for viewing, the chances of him making the right call, or getting more consistency in his calls, will be much higher. They say that X% of decisions are currently correct in the current system, but the flaw in decision % is so many decisions can be 50/50 and most referees often struggle for consistency in their calls.
At the end of the day, action needs to be taken. They obviously can't make technology work in open play for things like fouls and even offsides, so much of it can be interpretation, so they have to invest in giving 'humans' the best chance possible to make the correct call. IMO, giving one/three men this role isn't fair at all and doesn't work to the required standard.
