It was the first test in Sydney it was such a bad head injury Lucas had to retire after it.
In the second test Martin Dermott had a set to with Harrigan and all the pack piled in, that was the test when we started with an all Wigan pack.
I still watch the video of the match along with the Brisbane match against Wigan in 1994 when I want a bit of a lift.
It was rough and tough in those days though, especially the Tests.

I felt very sorry for him at the time. Wigan had just gone full time in the 91/92 season and he had sold his antique business to dedicate himself to being a full time professional RL player, then that happened. Spear tackle if I recall correctly. He was just reaching his peak as well developing into a fine prop.
It's injuries like that and the chances of them happening cutting short a career that has always had me on the side of increasing the salary cap so players aren't paid a pittance for what is a short career even if you don't end up like Lucas.

| Dermott went after him in the 2nd test and landed a few. Harrogan always played harder than anyone else, IIRC he'd already concussed a few players and broken someone's jaw in the same season and hadn't been banned for any of them.

| It was a swinging arm from Harragon not a spear tackle. It wasn't even penalised if I remember rightly. The referee thought he was faking concussion and yelled "he's alright get up!" at him.
It was a different game back then.
Dermott tried to get one back for his mate in the 2nd Test and sparked a scrap when Harragon pulled him back from supporting a run by Andy Platt. It turned into a brawl but nobody was sin binned or anything. Harragon was eventually "seen to" later in the second half legally for once by Kelvin Skerrett.
Both Andy Gregory's and Mal Reilly's biographies mention the Lucas incident. Apparently Reilly was very concerned as he really struggled to regain consciousness.
Lucas went on the record later as saying the incident was "just the fortunes of playing rugby".

Didn't he slip in the shower after the game and hurt himself? I'm sure I've read that somewhere.

I think you're right, I'm almost sure he slipped and hurt himself showering after the game.
