| Quote: wigan pie man "bull!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
have they never heard of ROCK SALT
stick that down at the first signs of freeze and snow will melt.
SNOW PLOUGHS ?
THESE CONDITIONS ARNT RARE.....its just that it doesnt normally last this long.
if they stockpiled salt, and invested in snow ploughs we would be in this mess.
last weekend when we had a partial thaw, i cleared my paths and drive and pavement by my house (at a price i may add)
so why the fook didnt the council get a few JCBs and clear the roads? it was coming up in layers.
caught with out pants down every year at -5 and a bit of snow, whilst folk in Moscow are getting to work in 4 ft of snow and -35'"
So these conditions aren't rare, yet they don't normally last this long? Perhaps that's precisely why they're rare???? Normally we get a snowfall and it's gone within a day or so. This has been going on for 3 weeks where I live, with snow, a freeze, slush, another freeze, snow, days of freezing weather, etc, etc, all topped off by 24 hours of heavy snow up until this evening.
I cannot recall such prolonged snow on the ground, so many snowfalls, such low temperatures all together over a 3-week period. I'm not of your advanced years but I can remember back well over 25 years, and Channel 4 have just stated this is the worst cold snap for 30 years.
And you think they [i didn't[/i stockpile before the winter?? Perhaps, just perhaps, there have been such prolonged and therefore unexpected conditions existing supplies have run out and are being replenished daily as they are thrown out onto the busiest and most vital routes day after day. Folk in Moscow get months of hellish snow every year. That is why they are prepared. We normally get a few days of snow and a few icey nights, and that's what we prepare for, with a few contingencies for harsher weather. Of course we could prepare for these conditions every year, have dozens of unused gritters sitting around for 20 years until they might be needed, hire additional staff just in case and add £50 to your council tax to pay for it all?
Quote: wigan pie man "Have they f*cking hell.
This snow debacle neatly sums up just how useless, selfish and uncaring Wigan Council are.'"
Yes, the bstards. Making it snow like that.

| I work for the council so had to go in... They closed the service I work for at about 1pm though so everybody headed for home. Loads of people couldn't get in... It took me an hour and a half to just get from Goose Green to Golborne... And an hour of that was spent queueing on Warrington Road near Sainsbury's!

I would love em to try and keep Siberia up and running.

I managed to get my lad to school at the top of Miles Lane but getting out of my street was a pain. I didn't attempt Appley Lane North or Back Lane.

| Makes me laugh how some people have a big sulking hissy fit over the weather. "Why aren't the council making it go away?"
Just deal with it, see the funny side of it and it'll all be gone before you know it. All this talk of lawsuits if someone slips on a bit of ice is absolutely nonsensical.
Just think what people in the past have had to deal with or people in other parts of the world right now. I feel embarrassed for some people with the attitudes they show.

| Quote: Bilko "Apparently Wigan Council has 10 gritter wagons that have to cover all of Wigan and Leigh.
It did come all of a sudden over night. I was up late and it was rain till about 3am then it turned to heavy snow.
You also have to take into account the staff. One worker for another council said he had done over 100 hours overtime during christmas period to try and keep things going. If they employed loads of men and we have a mild winter, some people (not naming any names) would moan we were wasting cash on them.
The reason things are worse these days is a, the buggers that are rlhttps://www.hse.gov.uk/rl and b, the amount of cars on the road compared to 20 years has increased dramatically whilst public transport standards have decreased. People also have to travel further to work with most of the local factories having closed.'"
have seen the unemployment figures?
its not beyond the bounds of the council to employ TEMPS over winter, like shops do for christmas., then if the snow comes we have the man power.
but what about the means?
like a later poster says (im not quoting so i dont post twice) they DO stockpile grit and salt.
so why dont they stockpile it year in year out and let the pile get bigger for occasions like these?
its called forward thinking......sumat most local authorities have never heard of.
i would be happy for the council to employ extra men, spend extra on stockpiles, if it meant i could get off my estate to go shopping and that my bin got emptied.

Back Lane wasn't too bad.
However it does seem that they're only gritting from Hullet Close upwards, must be going through Woodnook estate.
If it freezes the bottom is going to be frightening.
Apparently somebody has been skiing down it today

| In Sheffield they have CIty Centre Ambassadors, I'm not entirely certain what they do other than just wander around looking like they feel important. Today a few council peeps were out shovelling snow while said ambassadors did bugger all. I saw at least six of them just wandering about A few more shovels and grit and things would have been much easier.
It was like a ghost town though, spookily quiet in the centre as no one could get there!
