| Quote: Stu M "I see Wane has said today that Newman will go back to Leeds a different player after 3 weeks with him. I'm sure Rohan Smith will appreciate those comments.
This is the side of Wane that I don't like, the incessant need to big himself up. Whether or not there's truth in what he's saying it doesn't need to be made public and its comments like that which wind opposition fans up.
This isn't an anti-Wigan thing either. If another high profile coach had said similar I would be quick to criticise. I'm sure he thinks the players in the squad have no idea of a good culture or a winning mentality. He couldn't be further from the truth.'"
Presume you’re referring to different comments to one’s I’ve noted below that I found in the Rugby League alive article?
Wane on Newman said-
“He’s been brilliant. He’s been fantastic, so enjoyable to coach. He’ll be in for a tough time tonight when we go through his video but a lot of good things and I rate him very highly. The way he’s changed and behaved the way I wanted him to behave has been outstanding so credit to the Rhinos, but they are also getting a player back who will be a different player.”
It can’t be that paragraph, so will have to wait for what you’ve seen to give a proper view.
On a side note, Newman himself has just said in an interview I watched that he thinks training and playing with guys like Whitehead, Bateman and Burgess will improve him for when he goes back to Leeds. Offensive to his Leeds teammates so you think?

No. It’s that paragraph. What part of “they’ll be getting a player back who will be a different player” isn’t a pop at Leeds or Rohan Smith or telling everyone how great Wane is?
He’s given some credit to Leeds but he’s still insinuated that he’s performed miracles with him in 3 weeks.

Come on Stu I had you down as being reasonable. You really are looking for things to have a go at if you’re saying Wane has come out and said he’ll be different “because he’s spent time with me”. Newman himself has commented how valuable it’s been to spend time with the NRL lads, the other players and in a different environment etc. He mentions how physically challenging the games are and how you can’t have a minute off.
Harry Smith will come back to Wigan a better player and a more confident player IMO as well. The same with many players going back to various clubs because of the different challenges you face, the way you go away from your comfort zone and from ideas taken from different coaches. Shaun Wane and Kristian Woolf have won numerous trophies between them, so you would like to think they’re pretty high level coaches as well, so maybe there is some potential players would benefit from working with them.

Yip it is that article, hence why I asked for the link because I thought no way on earth can he mean the one I've seen
Talk about clutching at straws
He doesn't even say "better player after 3 weeks with HIM"

I guess it’s subjective and how you interpret it. If it’s a better player for mixing with NRL players and playing at a higher intensity then fair enough they are valid comments.
I read it as more in relation to behaviour/culture with saying it in the same context as talking about his recent behavioural issues.
For the sake of being fair I’ll reflect and cut him some slack seeing as I’ve not heard the full interview.

I'm.going to wait for NKs response to this (and I'll explain why later if you want).

I think the modern society call it ‘unconscious bias’ and reading those comments in the way you have is a prime example IMO.
I recall Wanes comments after the World Cup semi final defeat and it was all ‘don’t blame the players, blame me, I’ve made mistakes, I need to be better’ and so on. To make out he’s some sort of attention grabbing, self obsessed big head is wrong from what I see and read.
Taking all comments out of the equation, Harry Newman has looked in a different frame of mind mentally, so something has worked but that could be Wane, the leaders within the group talking to him, Newman himself just realising he needs to change etc etc.

Hands up I’ve had a long day at work and quickly read the article. If I’ve got it wrong then I’ve got it wrong.
However by the same token don’t portray Wane as some sort of shy, humble leader. He says things in public that don’t need to be said in public.
I completely agree with his comments on Wellens but he didn’t need to say them live on BBC1. A guy who he describes as a close friend. Those comments should be private and to Wellens only.

| Can’t quote again for some reason. Not having a go Stu, I’m guilty of it myself I’m sure. I just don’t read it like that at all.
I know he comes out and backs his ability but why shouldn’t he? His record in coaching is outstanding but he very rarely makes excuses, he doesn’t publicly go after his players or throw them under a bus, he builds them up and on an occasion like that Samoa defeat, he tried to put all the blame on his own shoulders and said he should’ve done things better and would look to improve.
Ultimately I just think time spent in an environment where the countries best players are all together and they’re playing against some monsters in that Tonga pack, the likes of which they rarely face in Superleague will improve most of the England lads in one way or another.

There is literally only one way to interpret "so credit to the Rhinos". Any other interpretation is complete and utter BS. Still theres been a lot of that on this thread so perhaps it's no surprise.

I also take my comment back about Newman not a winning mentality after spending time with Wane and that environment I am sure he has now

There we go
For what the 'ape' may get wrong in his comments about other coaches, the players speak volumes and thats what matters...
