It is 15 years since I spent three weeks in Sydney so I couldn't give any guide about prices. However what I do remember is that the prices in the RSL clubs were far cheaper than here. I lived on steaks (lunch & dinner) and washed down with the cheapest plonk I have ever known. The two RSL clubs I found in Sydney were located in George St (the main one) and Barrack St (only open at lunch time to cater for the city workers. RSL stands for Returned Servicemen League - in other words like our British Legion. You have to sign in but just say the magic words "from the UK" and there's no problem. If you go during the evening at some point the lights will dim and everybody is asked to stand for a minutes silence while over the loudspeakers the usual tribute to the fallen is recited. The same tribute that is always used here ( they shall grow not old etc), so it is over in no time. I stayed in a hotel in York St and the club in Barrack St was just round the corner. Did most of the tourist things while I was there but the only one I repeated was a trip to Watsons Bay which I adored. Watsons Bay is the place where the famous Doyles Restaurant is situated. Seafood to die for - but not cheap.
