I thought Wakefield played in their traditional white with red/blue band and we changed to blue to avoid a clash ?, I could be wrong it was a long time ago !!

We did give it back, I think Leigh East still wear it !!!!!!!!

Latics initially played in red and white (styled like a Blackburn shirt) during the 30's and 40's before moving to blue and white (styled like Arsenal). The stripes were born in 78 when we were elected to the league.


IMO the shirt has to be cherry/white hoops. You can still play around a bit whilst keeping the hoops (see QPR and 'the poor relations of Glasgow Rangers' shirts)

I'm sure we used to play in all-white in the late seventies, with the red adidas stripes down the sides. Can anyone confirm?

Sorry, I don't remember an all-white shirt but I palyed some rugby then so maybe I missed it.

All white with two or three red stripes down the sleeves IIRC.

I've seen the video of Green Vigo scoring about 4 tries against Leeds in an all red shirt.

He scored three at Headingley in a JPS game, and caused the Leeds and England winger John Atkinson to retire.

That's where I've seen it, isn't it 101 great RL tries? Wigan had all red Shirt (possibly with white Adidas style stripes down the sleves, can't really remember).

Interesting note on the point about Leigh wearing Cherry and White before Wigan, In the Northern Union's first official Football annual Wigan were listed as 'Colours, Cherry and White' while Leigh were listed as 'Colours, White Jerseys and Blue Knikers'.
