Try and find the Wigan/Wire game around 98-99, first game of the season, we got battered on the score board but unlike your 10 minutes we did 80 minutes non stop, back in the day we had brilliant fans, now it's like they are waiting for something.

39110_1363272058.jpg Dropkick Murphy..we actually saw and heard a mass of bouncing and scarf and flag waving to Dale Cavese that drowned out anything we could muster.. It stopped us singing our own celebratory songs, it died out seconds later when we accepted we couldn't be heard over the Wigan lot
Celebrations muted from us, job done from them. Most fans who slag them off are jealous their own club's support is nowhere near that good

sally cinnamon..Why not discuss Wigan? It's a rugby league message board. Wigan are the most famous brand in rugby league
-
Tre Cool..Saints fans are hopeless unless it's a cup final or grand final. Wigan fans are so much more loyal and passionate
-
the flying biscuit..Wires havent been massively succesful over the years, but I've spoke to Brian Bevan And he spoke to me and i wouldnt swap that for Wigans History, ever
-
Ande..on the TV i could only hear the Wigan fans with about 10 to go

Wire fan going on about history nice.
I'm talking about now, no other set of fans would have done that.
I honestly think we will get so much better as well. The ultras have been going just over a year and after 5 or 6 who knows what could happen.
I can honestly say that I wish every single club in super league had something similar. An improved atmosphere at all games would result in more people wanting to attend which means higher gates and many people watching on tv would stand up and take notice of this kind of passionate support.

agree again but it won't, Wigan's new 'fan club' for want of a better word was born out of insecurity and changing other teams perception of you the wigan fan (not just you), if anyone at any game left early, it was always known as the Wigan walk, even the Sky team mocked it, now that's changed. Other clubs like some of their grounds are stuck in the dark ages and this is just too modern for some.

You seem to make out that it came from guilt. I don't think it did. It has come from the passion of the people involved. We did not make an aim to stop others from doing the walk.
The walk has happened with all clubs for years now. Wigan gained a rep from doing it in their dark days and it has continued and jumped on everytime we have a bad game. One Wigan fan was filmed walking away from cardiff when we got battered and yet nothing was said of saints fans leaving early when we thrashed them at Widnes or when we beat your lot in the QF of the cup... or the Leeds fans at Wembley.
For the record, some of our fans do still do it. But so do other fans.
I believe we have some of the worst fans in the world, they leave early, give stick to the players, moan for the sake of moaning, only turn up for the big games etc..... but that minority are far outwieghed by some of our fans who I believe are some of the best in the world. Look how our attendances flew up when we were at the bottom of the table as an examlple. I am not talking about our 'ultras' here but just our fans in general.
On sunday the Brigantes was a small group at the back, the rest of the stand was getting behind the chanting and supporting the lads even though we were losing. I am not claiming the 'best' supporters are the Brigantes or myself.

| People are people at the end of the day, doesn't matter who they support.
What you have with ultras/brigantes is organisation, just a little is enough for other people to join in, everyone else are currently a disjointed mess, it wouldn't take much to get other clubs to do the same, trouble is no one seems to be ars*d

Other clubs don't even need the flags, merchandise, meetings etc. but maybe just a group of fans who get together to sing.
Looking at the south stand, there is a couple of groups throughout the stand but they are never doing the same thing. If all the people who wanted to sing were in the same place then it would work very well IMO.
Much like at our place, plenty of people want to sing and start songs but they are all spread out. If our regular group of away fans were all stood together then we could have a great atmosphere at home games.

| What I don't understand is why people revolt over it so much. It's not like we're going round in hooded tops kicking people to death after the game and launching flares on to the field. It has been clearly set up to improve the atmosphere and bring some more fun into the game. This was clearly proved on Sunday. With 15 minutes to go when the drum was rolling you just knew what was coming and then everyone picked up and didn't care about the result. Well Done!

The problem from my perspective is that it drowned out our 'We can see you sneaking out' song which was particulary hurtfull as we'd been practicing that all week.
And to compound matters, our rousing rendition of 'Top of the league, your having a laugh' was barely audible.
Frankly I dont think that was fair and definately not in the spirit of the Chanting & Naughty Songs Act 1957

I am not one to go to games in a big group, attended the game on sunday with my daughter and the atmosphere that was generated in the West stand did take the focus off the on pitch debacle. I don't think that you need to apologise for enjoying yourselves.

| I dont go in for Pie hating, I was brought up in Wigan, I go along with the long held theory that the game needs a good Wigan side. But with that most famous club in the world tag comes responsibility and its not been on show since Maguire took charge.
Of course one thing not mentioned by Wire fans, is that your self indulgent chanting spoiled what was in effect our last game fixture of the season at home, and therefore a point of celebration of the years efforts by our team. I tried to have a conversation with my wife and kids by the pitchside after the game and was effectively driven off by loud overbearing singing.
Your undertsandable support for your team, was as you all know, also a show of disrespect to our team and supporters that just beat your team, it was a loud and annoying thumbing your nose at us, as well as supporting your team, and that's what gets people goat and has caused much comment and that's why it deserves some stick.
Wait till the Crusaders start their 'Welcome in the hillside' song on Friday evening, over and over again, you'll be running for the pier to throw yourselves off it !
Sing by all means but do it on your own soil, not really in the spirit of our game, which is starting to be the default position Wigan is adopting these days.

| So let me get this straight. Sounds like Wigan fans supported their team and had a great time. Sounds like Wire fans supported their team and had a great time. Awesome!
God knows why fans have to bang on about being 'the very very best in the land', it's pathetic and childish!
I came to only my third game of the year as I now live in Edinburgh, and had an absolutely brilliant time. I brought my Scottish girlfriend along and she is now firmly converted from Yawnion!
