The reason most fans dislike Tomkins is purely down to his cheating antics and gamesmanship. Don't kid yourselves you don't know what we mean; the trapping of an opposition players arm under the ball; the holding on to an oppostion players shirt whilst being tackled etc. Its nothing to do with the fact he plays for Wigan, nothing to do with us being jealous that he isn't in our team. He simply doesn't need the chip on the shoulder. Hopefully as he matures the arrogance will dissipate. (Moonlight Fit but because surely every drop goal should also be considered a knock on if that is the rule?
Enjoy your time Wigan, we most certainly did. Just hope you have a better coach replacement policy than ours.
Don't worry though, we'll be back

I find it funny that you think that Tomkins is boo'ed because we're all jealous of him, but you admit to booing McGuire as you think he's a cheat! Classic Wigan! How does the chant go again.... oh yeah, "cheat, cheat, cheat" Brilliant that one
Your comment would mean you believe that ONLY Sam does this? Crabtree at Huddersfield always uses his free arm to wrap it round the back of the neck of the tackler! Do you Boo him?
We didnt Boo McGuire last week! I dont recall any Wigan fans Booing an England player do you?
If your suggesting McGuire was going for a drop goal then oh dear!!

Remarkable lack of lateral thinking (and no, that's not a reference to a flat pass!)

No, you wazzocks.
Im suggesting that if you have hold of the ball, then drop it to the ground with the intention of kicking it, it should (based on last fridays decision) be a knock on. Yet a drop goal is disallowed unless the ball has touched the ground first! Very inconsistent.
As regards big Eorl, never noticed him trapping with the ball, but I'll look out for it and boo accordingly ironically enough Leeds wanted to sign the big fella, but ended up with the better prop from Hudds

Indeed, but they're the mighty Wigan Warriors remember, the biggest team in the stratosphere. Maybe after 3 successive titles we'll start listening/understanding.
Happy Birthday by the way

Answered your question! If its dropped its dropped regardless if they then kick it!! If they are attempting a drop goal thats completly different.

| What if a half back drop kicks it sideways, the winger is in acres of space, scores. Bring it back for a knock on?
I'm being pedantic of course. But come on! This is a discussion board - at least provide an argument. Thurston grubbered thru for one of the tries in origin on wednesday. He took that one on the half volley too - knock on wasn't mentioned at all. Grey area - as highlighted by Cummings comments the other night. Expect McGuire did it just to exploit the inconsistent rule book. What a cheat :-s

There is no grey area where knock-ons are concerned. Whatever Eddie and Stevo or even Stuart Cummins say, a knock-on is a knock-on.

| An alien arrives in Wigan. He's heard about how good wigan are at rugby league, but doesn't know the rules. How would you explain what a knock on is?
(repeat for drop kick)

Just wait until the new era that Cummins has just ushered in gets going - when every player who drops the ball then shoes it forward and tries to claim it was a drop-kick. That'll confuse your alien alright.

So in using that explanation we might as well abolish the knock-on? Because according to that theory if say a prop taking the ball in with a loose carry happens to drop the ball BUT sticks his foot out and hits it after the bounce, he can say he was going for a kick through/drop goal? Come on!
McGuire dropped the ball in a loose carry, he did try to save it at the last minute, but failed. No try everyday of the week IMO.

| Tempted to say abolish the half-volleyed grubber (since its a knock on by that logic), but then its quite an attractive skill (as McGuire demonstrated last friday). Guess referees, as in the case of foul or dangerous play, need to make a call on intent. I.e. Did he intend kicking that or was it an consequence of dropping the ball? Obvious in most cases (like your prop example), not so last friday imo.
Incidentally, I wouldn't wish even a wigan fan try explain the rules to an alien. I have enough issues with these Aussie Rules loving victorians.
