A Bill Ashurst length-of-the-fielder against someone like Wakefield or Featherstone circa 1977. He chipped it over differnet clutches of defenders three times en route, catching it every time. The last two men he flattened before scorching 20 yards to touch down under the posts.

Truly the best individualist try I've ever seen a Wigan player score. If memory serves, it turned the game for us - taking us into the lead and securing victory.

If I was looking at all attributes of a great try - skills, speed, awareness, execution.... I can't actually think of one better than Quins away last year. Tomkins broke the line in his first ever super league game, the ball went out to Ainscough and he threw it behind him onto Carmont. Not only did this signal the start of Wigans new era with Sam Tomkins it pretty much had everything really.

However, this try is missing one thing, it was not a game winner therefore I would go with Joel Tomkins try at wire away this year, we were down and out of that game but managed to fight back which made it even more amazing, Tomkins chose to go for the power play from his own 40m line and chipped over, what an amazing play! The fact we had never won there made it even more amazing.

OR

Radlinski against Bradford in 2000. Last minute and the game was to go top of the league, doesn't get much better.

It is great watching Offiah and Robinson flying down the pitch but that is more about speed and awareness rather than skill where as the 3 above have everything IMO. Also a great try is also defined by the context of the situation as Offiah explains alot in his book.

What about Joel's superb solo effort at home vs Wire a few seasons back? He bounced a few off and then gassed it to the line. It was the first moment I really thought of Joel as having the potential for being a top class player.

Robinson vs Leeds in the GF was a special one. He’s crabbing across the pitch and when he spots a gap boom he’s gone.

I'll go a bit further back. Mark preston's 2nd try against Wire in the 1990 Challenge Cup Final. It was my first Wembley final and I still have it on VHS. It came straight from a kick on the last by Wire into our right hand corner, started with Hampson and went through the hands of Hanley, Edwards and Gregory before Preston put it down in the opposite corner of the field. Unbelievable

Henderson Gill's second in the JPS final in 1987. The try itself was 'OK', it was similar to Jason Robinson's in the grand final, but in slow motion, but several things make it special; firstly, he stepped Les Boyd, who expected him to go in the opposite direction. It was also the score that put us into the lead after it being 4-4 for the majority of the match.

It was also the first final I'd ever been to, but it was the fourth Wigan/Warrington game I'd been to, and this was the first time I'd ever seen us win against them.

Second favourite try came a few minutes later when Andy Goodway intercepted a kick to run 60 metres for the score. I knew we'd won, then.

What about Hanleys ghost try against Saints in the Challenge Cup final 1989?

I also loved the Radlinksi 2000 try, both Carneys tries against Saints and Leeds around the same time, any one of Robinsons tries and I liked the one at CP against Canterbury in 97 where Farrell chipped it to the corner, think Connolly caught it and passed it to Rads around his back for him to score, cracking try.

My 2 favourites are Offiah's try at Wembley, it was the first Wembley final that I can remember (been to one before it when I was too young to remember anything) I was sat level with where he broke, and just remember everyone jumping up and someone throwing me up in the air so that I could see him go over.

2nd one was Carney against Leeds in the playoffs. I couldn't go to the match because of uni, but watched it in the union and everyone, even non wigan/RL fans were screaming for him to keep going and get over. Great stuff.

I cant believe I forgot about that one. A casual glance makes you assume that Hanley is zig-zagging through the opposing players, but in reality he runs in an almost perfect straight line, just turning his body as he goes.

Fantastic try.

On a similar note, I couldn't make it to the Warrington game this year, so I watched it in the Stag in Orrell with a few mates. Joel Tomkins' try had the same effect with everyone in there - I've never heard a pub explode like that any other time.

or brett kenny in the 1985 final at wembley with brett running around the hull defence from half way

My 2 favourites are offiahs at wembley as it was my first and only final i have been to and secondly the try that Brett Dallas scored against Bradford in the last seconds of the game at the JJB and ran pretty much the distance of the pitch to clinch the win when the bulls fans thought that they had won. a014.gif a014.gif
