| Quote: Martyn Sadler "Sam Tomkins has won the Albert Goldthorpe Rookie of the Year Medal at a ceremonial lunch hosted by League Express at Headingley Carnegie Stadium.
The medal, which is solid silver, is awarded to the Rookie (defined as a player who played ten or fewer first-team games before the start of the season) who is adjudged to have made the biggest impact on the game in the regular Super League season.
Sam, 20, made his Super League debut this season, playing 20 matches so far in the regular Super League season.
'"
Which other players meet that criteria and could have been in the reckoning?
I can't think of anybody else.

Kyle Eastmond maybe although he's preformed nowhere near the level of Tomkins on a consistant basis.
Ainscough would be right up there aswell given the criteria even though he's only played half a year.

He walked the award. The criteria ruled out Kyle Eastmond or Ryan Hall.
For the main award the top 10 were
Michael Dobson 40 points
Danny Brough 31
Brett Hodgson 29
Sam Tomkins 25
Brad Drew 23
Thomas Bosc 21
Rangi Chase 21
Kevin Sinfield 20
Shaun Briscoe 18
Danny McGuire 16

| Shows we should have kept dobson though doesnt it. A Sam / Dobson partnership would be a WC partnership that could play for wigan for ten years.
We should have gone for dobson when we had the chance to get him last year instead of getting the lump riddell. Imagine Sam /Dobson in the middle with Leuleui at Hooker. That alone would have given us 6-8 points more this season and could possibly have secured second spot!

We couldn't keep Dobbo though, he was goin back to Australia anyway and was contracted under the Raiders then.

And before KR signed him we apparently made 3 increasingly higher offers for him but he chose the money on offer from KR instead.

Indeed, stated this a few weeks ago. ST & MD at halfbacks, TL at 9 and genuine $hithouse prop would have us up there in the Top Three.

Exactly. In an ideal world I'm sure we would love to see a Tomkins/Dobson combination but it wouldn't have been easy as that. Dobson was contracted for the Raiders the season after he was with us and then came over to KR after that, we did make him an offer but he went to KR for bigger wage offered.

He was already a KR player and contracted to them, it's not that simple.

Surely that shows we should have offered him a bigger offer then doesnt it?
Id bet he wasnt offered as much as riddell was as well....shows what a mistake that one was doesnt it?

Maybe we couldn't afford to offer him more? What has piggy got to do with Dobson signing? Piggy was only signed this season, as was Amos. Your obsession with Piggy is worrying.

Come on andyed mate be reasonable.
We have no idea how much money we had available, and we have no idea if he was or was not offered more than riddell, and we have no idea how much of a contract he's on at KR (and how much it would have taken to prise him away from it - quite possible it could have required even more money)
Any chance we can be a bit more positive instead of automatically assuming the worst from the club?

No Eastmond was excluded as he had played too many games in previous seasons.
