Maybe a back up halfback, someone with a bit of experience on a short term deal.
Big tall strong running second rower, like a McMeekin or Sironen type back rower.:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_20333.gif |

We look unfit as a team and despite him having a good game last night Zak Hardaker needs to trim down, he looks too bulky for me.

Sometimes you have to give credit where it is due. Powell produced a tactical masterclass last night, he realised midway through the first half that they had neither the skill nor the pace to run round us, so they were only ever score by barging over from close range, whilst at the same time the much bigger more experienced Cas forwards even at 20 to nil were making yards for fun down the middle of the park.
So the tactics changed to playing the game in our half and constantly starving us of possession by getting repeat sets which Trueman carried out to the letter, I bet we only had about 25% possession for the last 60 minutes of the game.
Our line and marker defence have been poor all season and this plus the constant flow of injuries we seem to be getting are a huge worry.
You can bet Chris Chester when he watches a recording of this match will have Brough and Miller practising this tactic all week in training, if the same pack turns out against Wakey next week I fear more of the same against an even bigger pack.
At least Lam will have a good idea now where we need strengthening for next season if he is the coach and has funds available to spend.

| Disappointing result after going 20-0 up but we need to put it in context. It was literally men against boys for a large part of that game and Cas played to their strengths very well. They took us the full length of the pitch virtually every set and their forwards steamrollered ours. That’s not being critical of the young lads who all gave 100% but just couldn’t match the bigger, stronger more experienced opponents. That led to a few penalties and even less possession and it’s no wonder we looked knackered.
We need to take heart from that first half where let’s face it, we were electric in attack and our left edge was again outstanding. It’s a shame we suffered the injury to Sammut, he was really starting to settle in and I’m worried sick for Manfredi.

It's a shame for Manfredi, but I'm starting to think that his future is not in rugby league.
It may sound uncharitable, but I'm getting fed up of carrying these injury-risk players. The likes of Lockers, Farrell, Clubb, Flower and Manfredi - much as we may love them, or may have loved them once - seem to spend more time on the treatment bench than the pitch, and the net result eventually is a game like last night, which is winnable but then suddenly all you've got left are kids.
We should also remember that this is a salary capped sport - and one crock (again, I use the uncharitable term advisedly) - is one too many, never mind four or five.

| It is not just that Manfredi is injured that worries me. Only since Burgess and Manfredi returned have we stopped being bullied in the backs as well as the forwards. We need size and aggression across the park or we will be turned over by bigger teams and Gildart and Sarge look so much better if the man outside is dividing the attention of the centre defending.

| Firstly, hope Manfredi (and obviously the other injured players) are okay.
Certainly a game of two halves. You exposed our woeful right edge in the first half, we exposed your powder-puff forwards in the second. Disregarding the last try given the circumstances it was scored in, the difference was in who was slightly better in the goalkicking department.
Obviously the attention was going to be on Hardaker. I’m glad none of the Cas fans did anything stupid (same can’t be said for the idiot who threw a flare at the Cas players after Wigan’s second half try). I found his post-match interview weird and more or less sums up his attitude - he just didn’t seem to care and if one of our players was smiling and laughing at the end of a defeat like that I’d be furious.
Again, another good game between the two teams. Roll on next time.

Was it really a Wigan fan though, You'd have to be a complete mongoloid to throw a flare right where your own team are kicking for goal, I smell a sad act Cas fan still hurt over 2006 and the Hardaker incident posing as a Wigan fan just to cause disruption and trouble

| Fitness wasn't the problem last night it was the injured players who did not take to the field. We then lost Sammut and Greenwood mid game and Manfedi late on. That's why we lost not a lack of fitness.

| I thought the first half lead was a little bit deceiving to be honest. Our backs played very well and they also took advantage of some very poor defending from Cas our wide. They had quite a few injuries in the backs and halves so perhaps that's no surprising. It did mean that we were largely able to avoid the 'wrestle' for a large part of the game and our starting pack of Navarrete and Bullock could do more running and less defending. Those two might be regular first team players but they aren't the ones you'd pick as the smart defenders. Those would be the likes of O'Loughlin, Flower, Clubb, Farrell etc. We probably don't have enough of them in the squad but that's another matter.
Against Catalans being able to bring Flower on at the same time as Byrne, Smithies and Shorrocks pretty much shored up the defence and stopped the bigger Catalans pack from having any luck trying to run straight over us. Not having Flower really cost us because as soon as we were relying more on the younger players they got on a roll and we couldn't contain them.
I'm a big fan of Byrne but I thought he really struggled defensively last night. He's got bags of enthusiasm but his tackling technique doesn't seem to be quite there yet and he ended up hanging off tackles and being turned inside out. Partington and Smithies looked a bit smarter in that department. In fact I thought Partington was outstanding defensively. Must have made 50 tackles or more. It's no surprise that the experienced forwards in the Cas pack were able to take advantage. Having to rely on young forwards might work once, but rarely works for a sustained period of time.
It was a case of Wigan playing brilliantly and then playing awful. It was more a case of Cas actually being able to make the most of their bigger and more experienced pack in the second half. We did well to score so many points early on because they could have torn us to pieces right from the start. So in that respect I see some positives from this game despite the soft tries.
Our side does still look weak in the forwards though. With top senior players (Lockers, Flower, Farrell) being injury prone, other senior players like Clubb, Tautai and Powell lacking any real form - there's a lot of pressure on Bullock (a championship player last year), Navarrete (Okay but not top quality), Isa (jack of all trades and master of none) followed by a lot of youngsters without significant first team experience. It's not a good situation. A lot of people were saying before the season started that we looked weak in the forwards and I doubt anyone has changed their mind. With Hamlin looking at a suspension we need proper reinforcements. Not 'projects', not more youngsters thrown in, actual experience forwards with a good track record.

| 51 tackles from Ollie Partington last night.
Had we been able to keep Sammut, Manfredi and Greenwood on the field, I think we would have won it. The loss of Manfredi caused disruption. Shenton and Eden had been invisible all night, but as soon as Manfredi went off Shenton went past Isa who was then having to defend in the centre position and that set up field position for the winning try, although it doesn't excuse the poor defending by Gildart and Burgess.
We haven't finished a game all season with four available subs, in fact we've only got past half time once with all four available. The luck has to change some time surely?
