Quote: Dawg "It could happen in any game lads. It's very unfortunate that one of SL's premier players has picked up an injury but it's a concept that is giving the England team a test mid season, rather than dry bumming a french team.'"

Do you really think would happen now?

There aren't too many this season who've dry-bummed Catalan.

I also find it amusing, that the England team we are currently seeking to test consists mainly of Leeds players who have failed test after test all season.

Perhaps the fans will start taking the international game seriously when the RFL do.

The good sign was he didn't need gas and air but ligament damage can be worse than a break in some cases lets pray he will only miss a few games

The match became an irrelevance once i saw how serious it looked and i'm gutted for him, just hope it's not as bad as feared.

He could easily of injured himself against Widnes next week though so its just one of those unfortunate things and we've just got to get on with it. Hopefully Mellor is recalled or Powell is given a chance to show what he can do.

The England squad was a joke.

During the build up ET and wiggy were discussing just how in form the selected players where and how that was a key factor for playing. Then when they got to discussing the inclusion of Ablett, Sinfeld, Peacock etc. they basically said form was not a prerequisite as these guys are the current champs and WCC winners etc

The changed their mission statement in the space of 5 minutes.

Quote: Deano G "Er, Tommy?

You do know that the Aussies don't pick players that play in SL on principle don't you - see Jamie Lyon.

Your exclusion of non Aus/NZ players would also have excluded Adrian Lam.

If you're point is that the Exiles team isn't as good as Australia, you're right, but it still a very strong side and there is an obvious point to England playing a team of this quality rather than say France.'"

At least the French would care and show some mild enthusiasm for the match.

That game last night was a complete non-event, regardless of any injuries. It was evident that neither the fans nor the exiles cared, and to be perfectly honest, as much as I was 'supporting' England, I still wanted all the Wigan players to do well, regardless of which side they were on.

That wouldn't happen if it was a proper test match.

It was embarrassing. Once I heard their bizarre justification of the team i turned off. There was no way i could listen to so much pap and the screen not get punched in.

Either

Kear has been told to toe the line by Sky and accepted it. In which case he his integrity is shot.

or

Kear actually believed what he said, in which case (whatever was left of) his professional ability is questionable

Wiggy is just an idiot, and has no credibility left before he spouted such cr@p

It really does scare me how much control SKY have, as I really cant believe that Kear could have said what he did without being 'encouraged'.

Someone else thinks much the same as most of us apparently:

England send Exiles packing but Thomas Leuluai injury sours night

England Knights 18-10 Exiles

Andy Wilson at Langtree Park

guardian.co.uk, Saturday 16 June 2012 22.31 BST

Comments (14)

England gained revenge for the last-gasp defeat they had suffered in the first of these matches against the cream of Super League's overseas imports with a worthy and workmanlike performance, but this was a night that offered more questions than answers, particularly about the future of the Exiles concept.

The atmosphere was flat, even though the attendance scraped into five figures, and a storm of near Ukrainian intensity shortly after kick-off led to a rash of understandable handling errors that prevented the game from developing any real momentum. Perhaps most significantly, the second half was marred by a serious ankle ligament injury to Thomas Leuluai, the Wigan scrum-half who was captaining the Exiles – leaving the current Super League leaders likely to lose an expensive import for two months that include the Challenge Cup semi-final, as the result of releasing him for a game designed primarily to benefit England.

It will be interesting to see how Wigan and the other clubs regard the second International Origin match that has been arranged this year, for a midweek date in Huddersfield next month, after such an emphatic demonstration of the potential risk.

There is no doubt that the exercise is a major boon to the England coach, Steve McNamara, before next year's World Cup, especially with the refusal of Australia and New Zealand to play international rugby this year meaning the end-of-season opposition will come from France and Wales. The Exiles provided far higher-calibre resistance, even if they lacked any visible desperation.

England played the slippery conditions sensibly, with the Leeds captain Kevin Sinfield kicking especially well, and grafted to a 12-0 lead in the first half-hour through well-taken tries from the second rows Gareth Hock and Danny Tickle.

The Exiles offered a reminder of their threat with a slick combination which ended with Francis Meli getting on the outside of England's debutant wing Josh Charnley for a try that cut the deficit to 12-4. But England stretched away again six minutes into the second half through a sharp finish from Sam Tomkins, the Wigan full-back who exerted a growing influence on the match.

He then almost set up a try for Ryan Hall, with whom he had combined so well in last year's Four Nations, only for the powerful Leeds wing to fumble in the incident that led to Leuluai's injury. Instead the Exiles subjected England to a fresh bout of pressure, and although both Tomkins and Hall denied them with quality defence, Daryl Millard eventually claimed their second try from a delicate kick by his Catalans team-mate Scott Dureau.

However, England saw out the rest of the game with reasonable comfort, allowing McNamara to claim a tangible improvement over the last 12 months, and the crowd produced its biggest cheer of the night – which was not saying much – when the St Helens hooker, James Roby, was named man of the match for a typically industrious effort which included 55 tackles. But it would take a brave man to guarantee the fixture's long-term future after this.

Wigan fans in "our club is bigger than International RL shocker"... As has been said, had he not gone in with the knees, then he would have injured himself. I'm not sure what you guys want? Tommy is one of the most passionate players in RL, and never takes a backward step. Given the chance to play a representative game for the "Southern Hemisphere" he'd take it every time. That's the attitude of the Southern Hemisphere players...loyalty and honour. I you game them a game of tiddlywinks against an English side they would want to smash us. THAT is what makes them successful....Desire and passion rather than apathy and small mindedness. Our international success will never materialise as long as we look upon these games as pointless. Get well soon Tommy, we need the strongest Wire v Wigan finals we can have.

I think you're letting parochialism take over there, what do you expect on a Wigan forum other than anger at a key player being injured in a quasi-international game? If M Monaghan, for instance, had played and been injured you'd be just as put out as we are.

I feel for Leuluai as he's a player i have a ton of respect for and i can understand Wigan fans being upset at his loss which looks like it could be season ending. However the ones calling for the game to now be scrapped because of this and hinting at compensation and saying the game was meaningless, remember the anger shown by Wigan fans when Goulding and McIlorum didn't get picked to play in this 'meaningless' match. Even though he'll be in the NRL next year you can bet if you asked Leuluai if he wants the Exiles game to continue on he'd say 100% yes.

You are being rather selective in your reading of views. True that Wigan fans were annoyed at the exclusion of certain players, but that was coupled with the fact that the whole selection of the England team was a joke. The "joke" has resulted in us losing a key player. I'm sure if you had lost a player through injury in this game, you would feel the same. So please don't come here taking some kind of moral high ground. You hve failed.

EDIT. just looked, you are a Leeds fan... Speaks volumes.

Quote: hatty "I disagree, we are constantly stating that we will never catch Australia because there are too many foreigners playing in super league yet here we are promoting a team of foreigners!! We need a better concept than this "exiles" farce because that game yesterday had anything but intensity or passion. The locker cup had more passion than what was on show yesterday. I think we need to work more on the lancs/York game more at least then the fans can show some passion which may rub off on the players'"

Probably a fair shout. There would be a bit more passion from fans etc. Is there enough talent though? Let's have a crack. Feel free to help.
