Briers will never retire. When he's no longer good enough for Wolves, he'll probably move to a tier two team. Incidently, have you anybody lined up to replace Finch?

Noticed as well last weekend Warrington were playing Ratchford the Rat (check out the blog photo on here) at full back and trying to chime him into an attacking link. Please tell me they are not trying to adapt his playing style and tactics to copy Sam Tomkins.'"

Brett Hodgson has been linking in the line for years alot long than Sam Tomkins. So maybe Wigan are telling Sam to copy Bretts style of play.

Yeah right. Players have done it for longer and more successfully than Hodgson has ever have and if Wigan are going to tell Tomkins to copy off anyone it is going to be the best and certainly not Hodgson. Maguire certainly did not come from Melbourne, see an aging and past it Hodgson and think that he was truely revolutionary and say to Tomkins I will move you to full back and you can copy Hodgson icon_lol.gif

Rads was a fullback that linked into the attacking line, all fullbacks do. Sam is not your run of the mill fullback who hits the line in a gap ala Hodgson etc etc, he comes into the line and creates space for himself or others, he isnt the final man on the end of a pass.

I was positive at the start of the season, many here were not. But i have been surprised by how good we have been, and how low others have slipped.

When Maguire came from Melbourne, Hodgson was Man of Steel, if he thought he was ageing and past it he probably kept his views to himself so as not to offend you guys about his views on the standard of competition he was now coaching in.

Tomkins is a different type of player with his own special attributes so the way he is used at fullback will be different from others, but the ideas of using a non-standard fullback at fullback is not new. I think fullback is probably the position on the field where you get most variety of different types of players being used there, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Fullback has the least amount of tackling and also when they join the line are not directly picked up by a man opposite so it's a way of introducing a shock weapon into the line and doing damage.

With us going back ten years there were brief experiments from Daryl Van de Velde and Steve Anderson of putting Briers at fullback, the idea being he would be fresh from not tackling and could chime into the line when he wanted and be an extra playmaker and hang back and do his long range kicking game from there, but it didn't work so both times it was soon ditched. But Van de Velde got some success out of sticking Allan Hunte there when we had Langer because many a time Langer would be close to the line and scuttling towards the outside then he'd whizz an inside ball to Hunte who would shoot through the middle at full pace and that was a try.

Ratchford is a slippery runner and probably the thought is he will be well used as a weapon from there rather than playing him stand off or centre but we will have to see, the jury is out on Ratchford IMO, when we signed Myler all the Salford fans told us Ratchford was the real talent not Myler and I quietly agreed with them so was pleased we got him but time will tell whether he goes on to be one of the best players in the league or is one of those that looked great as a young player and never kicked on. We signed Daryl Cardiss and Stuart Reardon who were both rated very highly in their early 20s and then tailed off.

Quote: cadoo "Funnily enough I was thinking along these lines last week. The OP wasn't saying that we are a team to be scared of rather than can we be. I hope that we can. I'm sure every team strives for that aura around them. Warrington annihilated teams last year and I remember reading on their opposition forums beforehand and they were 'frightened' in a sense at the prospect of getting a thorough battering at the hands of the Wolves. Unfortunately for Warrington they didn't win anything!

The last team I remember truly thinking 's--t we're in for a tough match here' was the Bradford side of 2003ish era. I'd look at their lineup and think we are in for a tough match. It was their pack that was intimidating. Stuart Fielden, Joe Vagana, Paul Anderson, Brian McDermott, Jamie Peacock, Lee Radford, Daniel Gartner etc they just dwarfed and crushed the opposition forwards. Then in the backs with Lesley Vianikolo, Tevita Viakona, Shontayne Hape, Paul Deacon, Robbie Paul, Leon Pryce etc class and power in the backs. A team that when we fell behind early doors I wondered how on earth we could beat them. That was the only team I have ever thought opposition teams were "scared" of. A trip to Bradford was such a daunting prospect at one time.

Back to Wigan and we certainly do have one of the biggest/meanest packs in the league. Lee Mossop, Mike McIlorum, Jeff Lima, Harrison Hansen, Gareth Hock and Sean O'loughlin - only Saints and Wire can match that IMO. The difference will be from the interchange/depth in the side - Stuart Fielden, Paul Prescott, Epalahame Lauaki, Liam Farrell, Chris Tuson, Ben Flower, Gil Dudson, Greg Burke, Jack Hughes etc Some big, powerful players in there.

Our backs have the class - Leuluai and Finch have been brilliant. Sam Tomkins is one of the best fullbacks in the world and is probably the best attacking fullback in the history of Super League. Josh Charnley is excellent on the wing and Pat Richards is always dangerous, but in a couple of years will need replacing. Carmont is on borrowed time, so we will need to do something about that at centre. Darrell Goulding it's early days, but so far the signs are promising.

If Wigan keep putting in THAT (Castleford) performance each week will Wigan scare teams?

Certainly. If we can do that next week to Catalans then I'm not sure many teams will fancy playing us! The reality is though that Castleford were pretty poor by the sounds of things and were with a make-shift coach. However you can only play what is in front of you and Wigan were certainly excellent last week. I guess consistency is what we must look to. If you can keep on winning and win by those type of scorelines then not many teams will look forward to playing you.

Or do they need to be ruthless for the full 80?

That is the aim for our lads. So far they've not been. It's difficult, but this team strives for perfection. At some point it's going to all click for 80 minutes and with some of the poor opposition in Super League at the moment, I feel a tonking for someone is inevitable with the team we have.'"

That was a cracking post in February when you wrote it. Now ,it's all working out as you saw it then.(apart from Fielden). Congratulations.

What are you talking about? Nothing to do with Hodgson regarding Madge's decision about playing Tomkins at full back. He coached Billy Slater at Melbourne for years. Tomkins is more like Slater than any other player in the world today.
Tony Smith must not rate Ratchford at all. He is on the bench today.

What counts as a thrashing?

How many points are you going to beat us by?

Have you forgotten last years CC quarter final???

Appears you have an ageing support as well as the playing staff.
A common sign of old age is forgetting things and losing the ability to add up.

A thrashing is beating a side by that many points that you dont need lee briers to kick a drop goal....

Just admit you fear another thrashing at home....

Sadly my memory is not what it once was, I'm sure Rogues will sympathise here....

I can only remember two fixtures into the past and the last time I remember Wigan coming to the Halliwell Jones we beat you 39-12 and the last time I remember going to the Pie Dome we beat you 22-20, fair play to Wigan that day you stayed with us till the end and made us realise we were in a game and that's all you can ask from your players.

Nope. All we can ask of our players is that they play to their potential. If they do, they will beat Wire, wherever we meet them this season.
