On paper yes, but since Amos wrapped his knee around the goalpost last year against Wakey he's not looked close to rediscovering that form. For evidence of that, see our game against Huddersfield two weeks ago

| Quote: DaveO "I just do not get this "if he plays at 6 he will get targeted so he has to play at 1". What do people think happened to Shaun Edwards when he played 6?
Edwards was also the most hated player in England (as someone said Sam is earlier in the thread). So what if Sam is? He needs to deal with it and his team mates need to do so as well.
Do Wire play Briers at 1 because every other team hates him (which they do)? Burrow at Leeds is probably the smallest player in the league so he ought to be at 1 following this logic.
For me Sam has got to play 6. At 1 he seems to have been worked out. He is not IMO playing as a 6 with a 1 on his back. He comes into the line often from quite deep and rarely passes the ball. He appears to be the one who is supposed to be taking the final pass in a move and if he doesn't score then that's the end of that. Stand off's don't play like that and do not attempt to take on the line at every play which is what Sam seems to be doing most of the time.
Also given the players we have then Tommy at 9 interchanging with Micky Mac gives us variation there and options so do that and play Finch at 7, Sam at 6 and Roberts at 1 and we have a very potent attack.
This is before we even think of the defensive aspects of playing full back. Sam is not tall enough or big enough IMO to fulfil the defensive obligations of a top full back.'"
Spot on.

| I honestly think that Sam should be playing at 6. He has looked threatening from full back, but his lack of distribution is becoming all too predictable. The idea of him being a world beater has evidently gone to his head and he believes he can take on the defence at every opportunity. Roberts has shown that he can create that doubt in the defenders mind of whether he'll pass it or go himself, the latter being what Sam chooses more often than not. People have been very critical of Roberts since he's come back from injury, and it all seems to stem from the game against Huddersfield. No full back in the world was going to catch those kicks and we need to learn the lesson: pressure the kicker! My first post so don't be too harsh!

| Sam and Finch in the halves for me. Rotate MM and Tommy at 9. Amos at 1 (thought he looked a bit sharper on Fri).

+1
I don't want TL anywhere near the halves. Play to his strengths, which isn't as a 7.

| IMO Tomkins hasn't got the size/defence to be a full back and his distribution is becoming far too easy to read. P'haps in a few years. Also don't think Joel should be put anywhere near the centres...

| I personally think he is better coming into the line late at 1.. but he is a natural 6 and he is the best thing to come out of our academy in years and its a massive thumbs up to the coaches at the younger levels to not just produce Sam Tomkins to the standard we know off, but also the likes of Lockers, Farrell, Joel, Goulding etc etc.
Where ever Sam lines up on Friday, he will be a threat to Leeds' aged defence.

| I agree with the poster that said against good teams he's better at 6 and against the poorer teams he's better at 1. This is because the bad defences know what he's going to do (when he comes round on the arc) they just still can't stop it as he's too quick. V better organised defences they know what's happening and can just shut him down.

Having an effective FB is the most important though, and if Amos can do it for us then playing Sam 6 and making do with DG on the wing, is in my opinion a stronger line up than if we played Sam at FB, but like I said, having a FB that is going to provide an attacking threat is very important, and hence it all depends on is Amos can find his form as a FB.
Amos' form basically decides to we have our 'solid' player in the halves Ie - Deacon, or do we have our 'solid' player on the wing Ie - DG. Solid implying does a job without being a game breaker.

| no matter what anyone thinks, MM is happy with him to play at FB again.
if the team announced in another thread on here today is correct i'm quite happy to see how it pans out, looks like a good defensive back line with joel and amos side by side, as long as joel doesn't lose his head again!

| Quote: king warrior "1 all day for me it gives us a extra half back so we have 3 plus we get 80 mins out of mcilorum who atm has been nothing short of awesome'"
When we moved Sam to fullback I honestly thought it was best for him, he would be able to spot the gaps and chip in as 2nd/3rd reciever and essentially be a 3rd half back on the pitch. But he is wasted at fullback. Its difficult to see him take the highballs, run it back in and get smashed everyweek.
When he moved to 6 last week and Amos to fullback, as e as we still were, it looked more potent. He was involved on the ball and Wire were more unsure of Amos and his movement. Thats definitely the way to go.
Another thing is Sam works best when he doesnt have time/space. He's more instinctive and will try things. When he gets the ball at 1, he has no option but to run it in 20 yards.
I can understand maguires idea behind it, the way sam chips in at 6 like Slater does at 1 at melbourne is similar and that might be his reasoning for Sam at 1... But as much as I love Tommy, deacs and mac, they are no Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk. He isnt getting that same service as Slater does, which makes slater so effective. He needs to be involved, and thats at 6, with finchy/deacs at 7 and Tommy/Mac at 9.
Micky Mac is a great hooker defensively. He will tackle non stop for 80 mins. But he doesnt have the attack/scoot of piggy, Tommy does, and we've seen that for NZ the last few years where he's won everything internationally.
Amos at 1
Sam at 6
Finch/Deacs at 7
Tommy/Micky Mac at 9
Just my 2 cents.
