I'd imagine that if said player were found to be in breach of their contract, then the club could sack them and not have to pay the amount on the cap. It's not the same as releasing a player just to gain cap space, where you would have to buy out the remainder of their contract.
If the club still had to pay the amount on the salary cap then the club would essentially be forced into keeping the player as they would still have to pay for them regardless!

Correct. As I said he is still young and not in his prime, he can cover for any of the outside backs as well.

It does - if we sacked anyone their entire season salary would come off our cap. Likewise if we signed someone to replace them the cap value would be as if we signed them for the whole season.
If we were to pay anybody any kind of "termination" payment this would be included in our cap calculation for the season.

Reports are circulating that Wigan Warriors' Great Britain centre Martin Gleeson has left the club with immediate effect.
Coach Michael Maguire refused to comment on the reports after Gleeson was left out of the Warriors' 32-16 Super League victory over Salford on Friday, replying 'no comment' when directly asked about the situation.
It is believed that Gleeson and his representatives met with the Wigan board yesterday afternoon and the two parties reached a mutual agreement to terminate the player's contract.
Gleeson's career has been blighted by controversy and he was famously sacked by St Helens for betting on his own side. His Wigan career has also seen him find himself in hot water after he was previously disciplined for an unspecified incident, as well as receiving a drink driving ban.
How about if he transfers to another club? Say Hull, he wouldnt count on our cap then surely?

As above, if someone leaves the club their salary for the entire season comes off our cap.

Didn't Saints just get rid and not sack him? :S I thought Wire just bought him as Saints wanted rid. Wasn't it a record signing?
And I thought if a player left their cap counted as if they were there the entire season? Coz wasn't that what people were saying about Hicks and Wire? (which I know they didn't do anything wrong with btw) But it didn't count coz he never actually played this year anyway. However Gleeson will have.
Im guessing that if he is sacked for "Gross Misconduct" or whatever there'd be an exclusion though.

But it different it a player is sacked, they have then been in breach of their contract (enough to be sacked anyway) and therefore it can be torn up. If a club just want to release a player (i.e. Wire + Hicks) they would have to pay up the remainder of that players contract and therefore it would still count on the cap.
If a player is sacked the player gets no more money and therefore frees up cap space.
If a player is "released" than they will have been bought out of their contract which will still remain on the cap (unless done before the season has started ala Wire)

| There's no one in SL who I can think of who would be an adequate replacement for Gleeson. So we'll have to look overseas imo. Now personally I wouldn't be against signing Cooper on a two year deal. He's still a class act as we saw in the WCC, and although he may be getting on a bit, that's not such a bad thing imo. We need someone to plug an unexpected gap for us, whilst we ready the longterm player to partner Charnley in the centre's. If we were to sign a younger Aussie centre on a longterm deal he'd block the progression that were trying to get from the academy to the first team. Cooper would be an ideal signing as he'd give us a little more time to prepare our young threequaters, plus at the end of the day he's a great player, with lot's of experience. Something that we'll lose a lot of next year with the departure's of Carmont, Gleeson, Deacon and Coley.

If a player leaves midway through the season (for whatever reason) all his salary for the entire season is taken off our cap calculation.
Likewise if we signed a replacement that would cost us £100k for half a season he'd be counted as costing us £200k.

Cooper's 31 now though and we wouldn't be able to get him until next season and signing 32 year old aussies is something the current regime wants to be moving away from. I agree I dont think we'll get an adequate replacement from SL but I dont think Matt Cooper is the answer imo. I think they will use Charnley, Joel Tomkins and possibly Marsh (although I dont think he is Wigan standard yet) to cover Gleeson this year then look to bring in a top class overseas player to replace Carmont at the end of the year, presuming he retires.

I think we all would really. But who's ready other than Charnley? I'd like to have kept Carmont for another year and played Charnley in place of Gleeson. But by the sounds of it Carmont is going. So that plans out the window.

Personally I think Charnley's ready to take over from Carmont next year. The spanner in the works has come from Gleeson, because were now having to replace both centre's at the end of the year. It would have been a much smoother transition to replace Carmont with Charnley next year and then replace Gleeson a couple of years after that.
Like I say I feel Charnley will do fine in place of Carmont next year, my worry's are however that we don't have another adequate replacement in the reserves who's ready to play in SL week in week out to fill Gleeson's spot.

| Tahu all the way for me.
A massive player for me and currently a free agent. Get him signed on a 1 + 1 year deal.
If he still wants to play the game then his capture would be quite a coup.

Said the same thing to my mate, don't know if he's got off-field issues or anything like that because a talented player like him should never be a free agent.

| He went to Aussie Union for more money and it didn't work out.
When he returned he had problems and left the Eels.
Was a very good player but is now 30.
He'd be worth a punt but I just don't think IL or MM will consider him the kind of player Wigan want to go with now.
We are going towards a very inexperienced 3/4 line with Goulding, Marsh, Carmont, Charnley which lined up at Salford. If George copped a knock we'll really be in trouble experience wise.
If Marsh or Charnley go to 3 then I think Roberts should play at 2 with Goulding going to 5.
Then we'd have Roberts, Marsh/Charnley, Carmont, Goulding.
That gives an experinced and an inexperienced man each side of the field. A 3/4 line of Goulding, Marsh, Carmont and Roberts isn't the right balance for me.
I'd rather have Cooper than Tahu. Cooper's playing, in form and a class act. Tahu right now is an unknown qualtity.
Trouble is Cooper's not available.
