| Quote: phibes "When Shaun was announced as Maguire's successor, I was very apprehensive. On one hand, I felt Shaun deserves his 'shot' but Maguire had transformed Brian Noble's team beyond recognition and was very hard act to follow. As a fellow Wiganer, I wanted Shaun to do well, but at that time, that was more in hope than expectation. It's fair to say that he exceeded my expectations and then some - and I, for one, was delighted. His record speaks for itself and he will go down as one of the most successful coaches in the club's history.
But the 'official record' doesn't tell the full story - he held the post of head coach when the club pursued a strategy of bringing through academy players at the expense of more experienced signings. So, there's no way that his success was 'bought' on the back of high-profile recruitment and I think he deserves even more kudos for bringing the young lads through and keeping us competitive.
He's also been in position for a long time in a sport where coaches (particularly at our club) don't stay in the job for seven seasons. Watching the team week-in, week-out, it's obvious that we've sustained the defensive ferocity that was a hallmark of the Maguire team, but as an attacking force, we've been fairly one-dimensional for a while now. For me, that's a combination of poor recruitment and Shaun's preferred mode of play, which is to focus on the defensive qualities of his halves. That aspect of team tactics is in urgent need of a refresh, particularly with Sam leaving - and in this respect, with the changes in playing personnel for next year, perhaps this is a good time for him to go.
I'm pleased that, to all intents and purposes, he's left on his own terms because of the many years of service he's put into the club.
And now there should be no shortage of motivation for our players to go out and win everything this season.'"
Hope you don't mind me commenting but that is an excellent post. Describes Wanes tenure and the parameters he had to work within precisely.

Edwards now being pushed by pundits for the England RU defence coach job.
Interesting that he was interviewed for the Quins head coach job. Shows he wants a new job, but also suggests that the Wigan job is not 'in the bag' as has been intimated by a few.

| Well done Wigan RL & Shaun Wane
The time was right for him to move on.
His legacy is not tarnished, he can move on and so can we.
Hoping for a cup this year to send him off.

| As much as I’d like to hope for a name like Edwards, Farrell or Barrett, it feels much more likely that we’ll end up with Betts, Chester or Winder. Which for me will be massively underwhelming.

And at the end, I asked you one question. "Do you want to be a semi-final team? Or do you want to do something special?" You all said you wanted to win. But talking is easy – it needed you to believe. It needed you to work hard – harder than you had – and make sacrifices. You did all that. you worked for each other. You stuck together when it was tough. And because of your efforts, you sit here tonight as champions. I'm proud of you. Be proud of yourselves. You've done something special.'

I can almost taste the outrage on the forum now if IL decides to appoint a 'project' coach!

Would such a reaction be unwarranted?
If he signed an NRL assistant then given what happened with Madge I don't think such a coach would be considered a "project". If he goes with Winder with say Tommy as assistant (my current guess) the words that spring to mind for me are not just "project" but "cheap" and "compliant".
I also think any prospective coach from outside the club will have an eye on the squad they will inherit. If it's weaker than the one Wane has now if Bateman and Sutton leave and Lockers & Tommy are another year older or retire then it doesn't look such an attractive gig which IMO would make the appointment of Winder more likely. Sign up Bateman at least and give the incoming coach some scope to recruit where he sees fit and then it might be different.

"Compliant" how? Are you intimating that an appointment like Winder would just be the monkey to IL's organ grinder and would coach the team according to IL's dictates and not be his own man?

IMHO a Betts, Chester or Winder would be a step backwards. IL must know this. What we need is a visionary coach who will take us to the next level not an underwhelming coach such as has been listed. This is all the more important to get sorted sooner rather than later given who Saints have just signed. We need some quality players to replace those leaving/likely to leave and with no appointed Head Coach it doesn’t make us look an attractive proposition with a likely weakening squad.
