Quote: Agent Mulder "Black is actually a more cooling colour. You only have to look at Spain, Portugal etc. to notice black is a common colour even in summer. The old Spanish and Portugese always wear dark colours because it apparently reflects the heat while pale colours absorb the heat. As for the match I very much doubt you will struggle but this season anything goes. Ala Bradford for you and Salford for us.'"

| The colour definitely does make a difference. Those of you who studied physics will know that black absorbs more heat than white objects. It is all to do with the electromagnetic spectrum. I even remember doing an experiment at school to prove it.
It is not an old wives tale at all. It is all down to the physics of our planet. So 'all black' is not a good summer rugby colour at all.

| Indeed, if you don't trust US military studies and would prefer more 'popular culture' proof, watch episode 38 of mythbusters.

Actually black absorbs more light. Light and heat are different forms of energy. Light is usually converted to heat, therefore black heats up more.

| Dont forget that study in 1978 that proved that depending on wind speed the effects changed between black and white and loose/tight. No difference at all was probably incorrect but the difference noticed to those players out there tonight will be miniscule, its hugely overplayed and certainly no excuse if somehow you get beat.

Was about to post something similar. If both teams stood perfectly still in the sunshine all match and there isn't a breath of a breeze, the material of the Wigan kit would feel hotter. However, as I hope that the Wigan players will choose to run around a bit today, the movement of the air around them will be removing more heat than is absorbed by the kit.
More importantly, any team news? (Ah, just seen the other thread..)

That study was in regards to that dark loose clothing can be cooler than light tight clothing. Clothing of the same composition has proven to be cooler when non black.

| If we brought in the factor of body fat percentage, would you be more interested?

Now that is the key question of the day. How does body fat percentage effect cooling rates. If only we knew of a player with a body fat percentage lower than the rest, we could get the club to test it.
