| Also, there is a time and a place. Rugby matches are not just for kids, kids just happen to be there. Now if somebody went to the Wacky Warehouse or a kid's party and started throwing about swear words and chanting songs with swear words in, then yes I would agree. Kids WILL hear swear words all over the place, whether it's in songs, on the T.V., in the playground, at home, walking down the street etc. Infact, most kids swear when they're with their friends and just don't swear infront of their parents or families. I certainly did, as did many of the people at my primary school and high school. The argument about there being a high percentage of women there, and women not liking swear words and a woman should not hear a swear word... That's absolute rubbish. Are we now in the 1920's???

| I have to say I agree with the original post. I don't like the F word in our songs when my 7 year old is there. He's never heard it from me and neither has my wife etc. it's about personal values and mine are such that I don't swear in front of kids and women. I'm not saying my values ar right or anybody else's are wrong but that's the way I am and I hope my son grows up with the same level of respect for others.

| I think the point the O/P was trying to make was why make up a chant that is offensive?
Some chants that have been around forever such as "the referee's a w****r" probably offend very few people despite the bad language.
I am guessing the O/P ignores things like "the referee's a w****r" and isn't offended by them but took exception to the chant in question and that is fair enough if he thought a line had been crossed.
Whether the club would react and do anything is hard to say. They would [ihave[/i to react to racist chanting and people would expect them to. If some new chant was offensive (as opposed to racist) so over stepped the mark and the club did react people could not complain given the rules. So I think anyone who thinks they can make up chants chock full of expletives and it will be ignored because swearing is part of the game might be surprised.

Not a problem with that at all. How do the stewards choose which to eject and which ones not to? There must have been a few thousand singing that song yesterday?

I never swear infront of my parents or family, and I certainly don't walk round the streets swearing at people. Sometimes I swear when watching football and rugby, sometimes I swear when I am talking with friends, and I do join in with the chants at the rugby which have swear words in. But by your logic, this means I don't have respect for others.
People pay their money to go to the match, and can say what they like. Obviously I don't agree with racism or violence. But it's freedom of speech at the end of the day, and it's just a different choice of language.

Its difficult I agree but they may decide to select a few to set an example.
Most of the best songs do not contain any offensive language and so I maintain that creating new ones with swear words is not needed especially when it offends some people. The 5 in a row song would still be as effective without the f word.

| just read most of this..........and agree with the OP.
its just ignorance to Eff and Blind in front of women and kids, let alone chant.
ok..your in a big group, and the stewards seem powerless,
yesterday i was in a different stand to the chanters and was a bit shocked tbh.
now if i hear someone Effing and blinding in front of women and my kids , i pull them up...............so if anyone on here is planning a repeat at Magic weekend, be warned..im probably going to be in the same sector , so dont think of doing it...............i'l politely ask the nearest person i hear chanting it, but i wont ask twice.
*be nice..change the words*

the crowd was only a few "thousand"...few dozen is closer.....easy for the stewards to find...but stewards are part timers who cba causing a rumpus...so they ignore it.
answer?....employ doormen type stewards who WILL go in and enforce the stadium rules

Well if you're swearing in front of other people and their children it's hardly an indication that you DO respect them is it? Tell me, why don't you swear in front of your own parents or swear at people in the street? More importantly, why doesn't the same reasoning apply to spectators and their children and families?

Freedom of speech applies to swearing at people in the street or your own parents, but by your own admission you don't do that, and I imagine that if you have kids of your own you don't swear at them either, despite it "just being a different choice of words."

Because the rugby is predominantly adults, emotions run high, people tend to swear when they get frustrated. Nobody is swearing at anyone in particular. Players on the pitch and in the dug-outs swear, you can see and hear this clearly. The coaches swear. Should they be ejected and banned for being 'disrespectful' too? Swearing happens. It always has and always will. You expect to hear it in certain places, a sporting arena is one of them. Kids are allowed in pubs, does this mean that people shouldn't be allowed to swear or show drunken behaviour in pubs just because kids are there? Everybody expects to hear swearing at a sports event, and I really don't think any of you are really all that surprised. If you think it is so inappropriate and want to protect your children from any bad language, maybe you should find a different activity for your children that doesn't involve being near any other people. I actually find it laughable that you think your kids are never going to hear swearwords. As for not swearing infront of women... Please get with the times.

There's a massive difference between someone shouting an obscenity out of frustration with the ref/players and a group of 100+ people singing a song containing obscenities though.
