| Quote: jonh "Sarg was outstanding in the centre for England in 2014 in the 4 Nations. Easily the best on tour.
He is regarded as one of the fittest players in the game.
He is 24 years old and ok he made the choice to try the NRL and it hasn’t worked out.
Of the lads that have come back I think there are underlying issues in relation to their underperformance -
Burgess I think had his confidence knocked and it needs building back up.
S Tomkins injured and one so bad his career was seriously under threat.
J Tomkins injured
Leuleui our style last year killed him.
Sarg has been injured but it is an upper body injury so shouldn’t be as devastating as Sams for example. He hardly seems lacking in confidence in fact you could argue the other way where he comes across as arrogant.
Obviously he returns as a risk but what signing isn’t a risk? He at least should settle back in quicker than others.
I’m not blown away by the signing but in the current climate it is as good as we can expect and with our injury record he provides excellent utility value.'"
I think John the issue with a lot of fans is that he wont be a utility player but may be the replacement for Gelling.
Also before season starts you look forward to watching new players yet again its another season with same old same old.
Personally I don't rate him at all.
I just hope he has ditched the girlfriend who caused numerous problems at the club.

| I disagree about the point about his injury being upper body. Aside from knees, shoulders are the most accident prone and the most difficult to get over.
In fact, in terms of the weight room, a shoulder injury is the most debilitating. If you have a knee injury you can likely work around any type of training. There probably isn't a single compound exercise going that doesn't utilise the shoulder. If you've got bad shoulders you can't squat, deadlift, bench, press, row or anything that builds size and strength.

There’s something in the article above that we should all remember. Sarg expresses frustration he wasn’t able to give the NRL his best shot as he played the first 5 games with a knee injury. When we criticise our players for poor form remember that they may well be playing with injury which is restricting them.

| Looks like we will be seeing the young lads fighting for a centre spot or are they all left sided as well?

If you saw him play for Wigan often enough you would surely be asking how on earth he got either. There seems some sort of collective amnesia affecting Wigan fans regarding Sarge because you are not the first one to ask what is the problem given he managed to do these things. I can only conclude those who quote these two things and so assume he must be good have never, ever seen him play for Wigan.

| i really don't get the negativity about this signing; sure enough he isn't one of the monster players who lit the WC up recently and he isn't a world class Aussie. but with the uncertainty around Gells and the fact that last year we got showed up with injuries in the back line I think this is a wise decision.
his utility value alone is worth the squad space, assuming he isn't on a crazy amount of money which I doubt he is to be fair - perhaps he is on a two year deal with a view to increase on good performance etc.
no matter his preferred position he WILL play where we need him and if he is temporary or permanent cover for Gells (if that does come about) then at least we still have our wingers on the wing and our centres in the centre unlike last year.
chin up guys.

| I wouldnt worry what position he plays, we all know he will be doing the work of 4 props every game. FPN should donate 90% of his salary to Dan before the season even starts.

Can’t fault that side of his game,if he can cut the drops out of his game he would be a decent player imo. He’s still relatively young so should/could improve.
The main issue with him imo is that he is a returning player and we’ve been burnt numerous times over the last few seasons and the fans are crying out for new faces.

It’s not just the fans who want new faces, the squad needs them imo. I have nothing in principle about signing players who have left providing they are why the squad needs at the time however I do think that a new face in the team can freshen things up and give everyone a lift.

| It's funny how when the squad was regularly overhauled and we hadn't won anything for a while, fans would yearn for a time when there was stability in the playing and coaching staff. We've had one bad season in ten years. We've also had horrific injury problems to overcome in the last two, which we did in 2016 but not really last year.
Save your judgement until we've had a decent run of luck with injuries. Maybe the fact that certain players are having their first proper preseason of their entire careers may help, who knows.
Okay, we have no big name signings to look forward to watching, but if we can get close to a fit first team on the pitch we will be fine. The squads of Hull and Castleford have hardly been tested yet. It would be interesting to see if they could cope as we have. We won in 2016 and came sixth last year. Leeds and Wire were bottom four with similar problems.
Glass half full friends!

There's stability and there is a squad that is going a little stale, all the best sports squads are turned over regular intervals and to the point of teams being broken up altogether and starting again.
Where Wigan are I suppose is down to your own point of view.
