he was given his chance and didn't take it...repeatedly.
i'm not making excuses for bile poured out on here, i'm just trying to explain why some wigan fans don't like the bloke. the fact that he ended up at saints where he pulled his socks up (to his eyebrows) and helped them become one of the most successful teams in recent years didn't do him any favours either |

Other 'villains' who were deemed to have turned their backs on Wigan as juniors were welcomed back into the fold later. Andy Gregory was one, Joe Lydon another, Andy Platt another, and of course Martin Gleeson.
But I think that it's gone too far with Long. It isn't just the attitude around Wigan that he indulges in, but his truly unforgivable sin of making Saints a top side. Irrational as it may be, these things have combined to get Wigan fans' backs up in a way previously unseen. Plus, he'd now be seen as coming here for a retirement payday. Wigan fans don't like it when Aussies do that any more, so a naturalised Sintellinser would win even less approval.

They could sign the devil himself and i wouldn't stop watching us but i do get the feeling he'd have an awful lot of work to do to even make the fans tolerate him.
It's an experienced head to play alongside Tomkins but he's be down my list. |

I'm not quite sure why everyone would get their knickers in a twist regarding Long. Admitedly he's past his best but what's he done to Wigan that makes people so against him signing for us?
