I hate it when fans spout this nonsense - Ainscough & Kev Penny are two incredibly exciting wingers with pace to burn & an ability to finish for fun. There are few enough players in RL these days who get a crowd on their feet when they have the ball - Sam Tomkins is one (not the best defender), Kyle Eastmond another (a rugby freak the like of which not seen since Jason Robinson), Ainscough & Penny are two more & really should not be allowed to leave the sport or SL because they "can't defend".
You didn't make that complaint when Martin Offiah was scoring tries for fun did you?

Why is it nonsense? A winger is no use to a team if he is consistently out of position in both defence and attack. His combination with Bailey, particularly in defence was truly woeful last night.
As I said the jury is out with Ainscough, as it is with Kevin Penny, as to whether they will ever be top level SL wingers. At this point in time, Darrell Goulding is a much better option than Shaun Ainscough for Wigan when available.

To even compare Ainscough and Penny to Offiah at this point in their career is laughable. Offiah had his defensive failings no doubt, but was on a different planet to them in attacking terms.

Does not look like it
A few on here felt that game was a "Blessing in disguise" as it wouldn't happened again and Wane would have them running laps naked at 6 am to get the message home.

If the lesson is having a flattering scoreline at half time, then being beaten by the better side in the second half...then no. Certainly wasn't down to a lack of effort this time.
Quins at pretty much full strength are a completely different proposition to the depleted whipping boys of early in the season and were never going to be easy beats especially when we had half a team missing. So it proved.

Unfortunately nobody seems to have caught on to the fact that Bailey, as long as he has played here, has been wasted as a centre. Any winger playing outside him has no chance of seeing the ball in a season. Calderwood never got any service from him and neither has anybody else since, when he has been at centre.

| Quote: giwildgo "Lessons learned from last night;
- Quins are a much better side now with most of their key players back as opposed to the injury hit whipping boys of earlier in the season. Credit where it is due for the second half performance.
- Players have to remain in their best position - Lockers is a top class 13 in attack / defence, but is wasted and largely ineffective at stand off.
- Bailey is no longer a functional SL centre due to his lack of pace and is in decline defensively.
- The jury is still out on whether Ainscough can ever develop an appropriate positional sense to be a good SL winger.
- Gleeson, Goulding and Coley are very underrated in terms of their overall contribution to Wigan this season, particularly in solidifying the defence and were hugely missed.
- Roberts has been a greater loss than I imagined he would be - the attack just doesn't seem anywhere near as dynamic.
- We have a really talented set of young players - but some are not physically or mentally ready to have the responsibility of a starting role in SL just yet and shouldn't be rushed.'"
I'm just wondering who that's directed at? Granted Walker did on some occasions look a little frail last night, but I'm struggling to think of anyone else that applies to. Ainscough should now be able to come in and do the job asked of him.

Aside from Walker, as well as Farrell played, he's not physically ready for a starting spot yet given his troubles with cramp at the hour mark and Mossop for now appears a better impact option from the bench, as he noticeably tired in the second half and switched off from some defensive assignments down the right flank (wasn't alone).
Ainscough doesn't have good enough concentration on his positioning to be a top level SL winger at present, so I'd say he isn't mentally ready.

Couldn't argue with the above. It did appear that the team as a whole were tiring as the match went on.

Well if you had been concentrating you would have seen Bailey shouting to Ainscough who he wanted him to cover and who he had got covered. With Bailey at the side of him he had no chance from the start.

Ainscough may as well of brought a chair on and sat down. The ball never got out to him enough, the two or three times he got the ball he made ground and looked dangerous. It was inside him where the whole Quins team seemed to steam through. Phelps got mullered a couple of times for pace especially the first try as well. Our squad maybe isnt as strong as we thought.

Ainscough isn't a scapegoat for last night by any stretch, I thought Bailey was awful in defence also - at least Ainscough has the excuse of first team inexperience, whilst making one notable cover tackle in the first half on an accelerating Kevin Penny and being generally starved of the ball.

| Our whole right side defence got torched several times in the second half. I dont think injuries can be a valid excuse because there was still enough quality out there in Wigan colours to have won the game. The chances were there to be turned into tries but 2nd half but we just didn't take them
