No if's or buts about this its excellent news for Wigan RLFC and a massive step forward for both the club and player in so many ways.

Although we've always used our academy to get players into the squad this long term deal is a massive endorsement for it and something all the academy players can aim for as well.

Massive kudos to IL on this he’s finally made a decision all the fans on here are in agreement with.

The better use we make of our academy the stronger we will be become. It’s a no brainer that if you can source your own players like Coley, Bailey, Smith etc then they will inverably stay longer and be on cheaper wages meaning you can splash the cash for those one or two really classy imports like Leeds do with Peacock & Webb or Saints with Gidley.

One of the most pleasing sights on Sunday wasnt Richards racing away in the last minute, or Phil Bailey scoring a couple of tries - It was the two sides of Sam Tomkins.

When he scored his try, the delight on his face was there for all to see, jumped in the air to celebrate.

When he kicked that out on the full, watch it again if youve recorded it and watch the despair on his face. Immediatly his head is in his hands and hes apologising and using a couple of choice words to describe his kick to himself.

Both of these show he is a winner and he wants to wear that Wigan shirt, and add that to his talent and he'll do fine for me.

Sam has undoubtedly been the best thing to happen to Wigan this season by some distance. He has come into a struggling team and more than held his own and been better than we all could of expected.

He's got all the attributes to be a world class player and long term I see him as our number 7 for a very long time.

The best thing about him for me is his attitude. Very calm, level headed lad who would bleed cherry and white. Got the potential to go down as a true Wigan great

I was very impressed with Tomkins at Craven Park on sunday. Out played both Dobson and Cooke and ran the show. Very good prospect, in fact I'd say the better of two good young players when put alongside Richie Myler.

Does anybody now where this will rank Sam in the way of earnings, does this new contract make him one of the say top 5 earners, or is it like a sliding scale increasing each year.

I doubt he will be on six figures. I would imagine it would increase year on year.

Doesn't really matter. Given our squad and who is out on loan he is bound to be one of the top 25 earners as I think we only have something like 27 players named as the 1st team squad and its the top 25 earners of them who count. There are more junior players then him in that 27.

As the is an extension of his current deal it also depends if they have decided to pay him more than he was due until his original contract was due to expire (2011 I think).
