I honestly believe that, at this moment in time, there's a lack of quality options available in the NRL. I've said it before, but there's 5 or 6 assistants who've moved around in the last couple of years. It takes a while for things to settle and new guys to earn their stripes. After that Bennett will be pulling together a brand new coaching dept together for the expansion side.
Peet is was 100% the right option imo.'"
Wasn't the Sharks job just as an assistant next season to Fitzgibbon?
Has he actually turned down the Wests job yet? We've known for a while there'd be an opening for next season, maybe if we'd got in early with a head coach job we may have had a chance, but we'll never know.

No you haven't. You've said you wanted someone to come in and shake it up without knowing whether he'll do that or not and that this is somewhat an easy option because he's in the "wigan bubble"
His CV is arguably better than Ciraldo's in terms of experience but because he has an Australian accent you'd bring in him over a guy who has been coaching for the last 11 years and heading up the best youth system in RL.

| Wasn't very optimistic when it was all rumours but now it's all announced officially i am quite excited. Delighted someone like Briers is coming in. That can only be an advantage to Peet.
Now for the recruitment..... We are still waaaayyyy short on quality.

I got the sense from Peet that Briers will focus mostly on attack though and Lockers on defence but maybe with more cross over than before. Lenagan certainly seems to keep an eye on the forums (commenting about fans calling this move out as penny pinching today) and I could see them wanting to avoid the situation where fans are saying ‘poor attack means it’s Briers fault’ and ‘poor defence is Lockers fault’. We seemed to have a bit of that with Winder recently.'"
I’ve no doubt whatsoever that the new structure will be costing the club more money but the strengthening of senior management within the club has at arms length has been long overdue.
If I was an assistant coach I’d want to cover all aspects of play particularly if I was ambitious and wanted the head coach role. I’d just find being an attack coach too restrictive.
I thought IL looked more like his old self today. Sounded more confident too.
Yeah maybe he was laying down a marker to avoid individual criticism which could be part of rebuilding the “team” ethic.

Yeah it was another assistants job, but I'm sure it would have offered him either more money or progression.
As far as I'm aware/read, he's turned the Wests job down.
For me, NRL coaches are great but last 2-3 years max. I'm happy that we've backed Peet and there's the potential that, at his age, he could be here 10+ years. If we can progress who we have and stop being walk overs when it comes to players leaving, then there's an exciting future for the club imo.

Yes I have - new ideas are needed and as I previously pointed out, when we've looked at something new and made a step change we've gone Australian, because unfortunately that is where the sport is played at another level compared to here. Ciraldo's extremely well thought of over there in the same way Maguire was.
Any new appointment is a risk so nobody knows if Peet or anyone else will be a success, but I'd take Grand Final winning Penrith's current assistant thanks - you obviously wouldn't.

How do you know that Peet doesn't have new ideas? You don't, and that reason is based on what you want and not on his CV or his experience etc.
What he does have is a very good CV as an assistant, as an head coach at academy level and I personally have heard very good things about him. All things that will do for me.
Was/is Ciraldo even available? If not then it's all pipe dreams. If we can pick who we want then i'll have Cleary please. Isn't that simple is it.

| People can agree or disagree with the appointment all they like but we’re here now and it’s happening, so surely everyone may as well give him a chance.
I noted that Lenagan mentioned his history for giving assistants the top job again today and bar Lam, who was a caretaker only to begin with, most have been excellent appointments. Is that just luck on Lenagans part? I’m not too sure. I’d like to think he sees something in them or is at least savvy enough to speak to the right people and get their recommendations on them. It’s not like they’ve not had long enough to form an opinion on Matty Peet, so hopefully the timing of the appointment is just right. The names of assistants Lenagan has appointed include Brian McDermott, Michael Maguire and Shaun Wane. These guys have 8 superleague and 1 NRL grand final win between them, along with a few challenge cups and WCC victories. It’s not a bad record is it?! Another name he threw out was Chris Wilder in football, who he gave his first managers job at Oxford United. He did an unbelievable job with Sheffield United after that, turning them around, taking them up through two divisions and then guided them to premier league safety at a canter and on a shoestring in their first season.
Lenagan has a history for picking the right men to coach his clubs. I’ll forgive him Adrian Lam and keep my fingers crossed this one will be like those four names mentioned above.

I get peoples reservations and in fairness to Wigan/Leeds Andy, he’s always very sensible with his posts, so I can live with his concerns about this appointment. I think we’re all unsure on how it will go but my view was always that unless a clean sweep was going to be done by totally clearing out the staff and letting a new man bring in his people and his players (which was never happening), then we should go back to Wane and what we know works. We’ve gone somewhere in between but we have good people involved and things can only get better (well once I’ve got watching Saints win another Grand Final out of the way on Saturday evening).

You're obviously happy with Peet, that's fine. I don't know why you seem to have a problem with me wanting something different and giving my reason's for them.
Maybe Ciraldo was available, maybe he wasn't - he was someone I thought was potentially obtainable given he's an assistant and extremely well thought of who would make a big difference.
I don't envy Peet's job for next season, he's effectively coaching with one hand tied behind his back given the current squad he has.

He wouldn't have been my choice if I could have anyone BUT his CV and experience means he deserves a chance (IMO) so to shoot him down because he isn't from the NRL seems a little unfair.
If Peet is coaching with one arm behind his back because of the squad, then it doesn't matter who we bring in does it

| I don’t know how people can listen to Peet and Wane interviews on Wigan TV and not get excited.
Wane’s last great gift to the club will be support 3 young up and coming coaches who, if successful, could coach the club for the next decade plus (Peet/Briers/SOL/Tommy).

Let's not get ahead of ourselves, they haven't coached game 1 yet.
