| Pretty brutal interview, Carney pulled no punches with that one.
Got to say I didn’t feel Hardakers empathy but maybe that’s him as a person, seemed to be close to laughing the whole interview.

And you wonder why people dont like Wigan?! Notts post was quite correct. We were a success on the field last season, a LLS and a Grand Final would be a successful season for most clubs. His point was that even when Zak was having an easy time of it on the field in a side winning most weeks he still couldn’t stay out of trouble off it.

In fairness the ZH rumour has been knocking round most of the year while the Sam to Catalan only surfaced around easter time, at least to my eyes anyway, so I think Tomkins was well within his rights to sort a deal out for next season early doors.

Some on here would have you believe winning a pre-season match against an Aussie side meant 2017 was a successful season for Wigan.

| I bet the “I was a Wigan fan when I was younger” comment has gone down well over on the white rose side of the hills.
Great trolling!

Yet how would anyone have known what WADA were going to do?
Too much tin foil hat stuff going on here.
Sam couldn't sort a deal out with Catalans as the deal was in Wigan s favour.
Wigan couldn't sort a deal out with hardaker until they knew the WADA investigation results.
Why offer Sam anything if they wanted him gone? Just don't offer him a contract.
That's a million maybes but the facts are a little different.

| Zak must have had a big wardrobe for all the rugby shirts he had as a kid. So far, he’s been a childhood supporter or Featherstone, Leeds and Wigan. I’m almost offended he didn’t claim to be a childhood Cas supporter when he joined us.
He’s too stupid to maintain the story he told the UKAD panel. At the panel he said he’d gone on a drinking binge on Wednesday and this is when he took cocaine. This always seemed odd as he was photographed doing Cas’ captain’s run session on Thursday morning, which would have been difficult given the amount of drink and drugs he claimed to have consumed into the early hours. In the interview he now says his binge happened on the Tuesday, not the Wednesday. Obviously, it calls into question the version of events given to the panel, as it’s unlikely the cocaine taken on Tuesday would still be detected in a test late on Friday night.
I think Wigan need to shut him up and tell him to keep his head down. He’s so stupid he’s going to drop himself in it.

Doubt it'll bother people. Just sounds like an attempt to win Wigan fans over early doors which I'm sure will work for some but other wiser ones will be won other by what he does in a Wigan shirt in the future not because he had a signed one when he was a kid.

| Doubt the Wigan fan thing was not genuine.
Let’s face it we are the Man United/Real Madrid of the rugby league world.
In the 90’s every young lad had a wigan shirt.

I am not doubting your story, I just don't see how it is relevant to him signing for Wigan. He is entitled to a social life.

What WADA were going to do was give him a maximum of a two year ban. So he'd have been available toward the end of Feb / early March 2019 so hardly a big deal compared to September if the club had decided to go for him.
Sam was told the option of his contract was not being taken up at the start of the season (he says so in his two part Wigan Today interview). That being so Wigan were either confident they could secure an equally good or better replacement or thought he'd just fall into line when they eventually offered him a deal.
If you want to dismiss any conspiracy theories about the reason behind the decision not to take up the option for Sam was Hardaker joining Wigan, then you have to accept Wigan dropped the ball with Sam. They clearly told him the option wasn't being taken up at the start of the season but also clearly didn't offer him a four year deal [iat that time[/i, the evidence for this being Radlinski saying Les Cats got in first. Now I know they made an illegal approach but if Wigan wanted him to stay the four year offer should have been on the table at the start of the season the minute they declined the option and before Les Cats got a whiff and before Sam new anything of it. The fact it wasn't makes it look like an afterthought.
Personally I don't believe the decision to sign a player with Hardaker's background will have been taken lightly or simply as a reaction to Sam leaving. You don't decide a player with his record is worth a risk in what amounts to a matter of weeks just because a current player didn't take up a contract offer. I'd certainly hope Wigan would not rush in just because Sam decided he was off. So on balance when you you look at the timeline of what happened it really isn't beyond the realms of possibility what we see is the fruition of a series of conscious decisions made by the club.
