Let's accept SW is a great coach
Let's accept that he makes mistakes, but is the best man for the job and IMO is a better coach than MM.
'"
A better coach then MM, what a debating point that is! He's achieved something MM didn't but could he have done it had he followed Noble and not Maguire himself?
He's certainly proved his doubters wrong and confirmed what a good coach he is. He certainly thinks more long term then Maguire did and doesn't just play for the moment but give youngsters chances to build them for future seasons.
My hunch is he couldn't have achieved quite what he has if Maguire hasn't been here first but he's definitely been the correct choice to take forward his work.

I'd go a long with this. I think Madge brought the "new broom" that was needed at that time. It was imperative that his successor was his assistant and it was very much a case of passing on the baton. It was then up to SW to run with it; and there's the thing. He was expected to drop it an fail, but a League Leaders Shield, Challenge Cup and Grand Final Title illustrate the guys credentials. You can throw into that mix the blooding of the youngsters which this year has been a great success and has laid foundations for the coming years.

| Quote: Cruncher "You do realise, don't you, that using terms like 'constantly happy brigade' is something of a faux pas in this context?
It's a bit of a give-away about where you stand. It also looks increasingly silly.
To start with, what does it actually mean? As you rightly point out, I expressed worry and disappointment with our mid-season results and because we were losing players. But I was still called a 'happy clapper' - presumably because I wasn't worried and upset enough (in other words, because I didn't agree with those calling down annihilation on the coach and the chairman).
In actual fact, the 'happy brigade', as you refer to them, don't really exist (if the club was being badly mismanaged - as it was under Whelan and Mo, EVERYONE would go to the barricades). But in reality, the phrase was coined not long after IL arrived by those who seemingly weren't prepared to give him a chance to rebuild the club, and was used to describe those who were - and it has continued to be used on and off for the same purpose ever since.
Yet even I, happy clapper that I am, didn't think anyone would be so ill-advised as to use it in the wake of IL and SW handing us our fourth major trophy in as many years. Congratulations on being the first - and only two days after it happened. That has to be a record.'"
I don't pretend to stand anywhere! Like you, I can see the immense good that IL has brought with him as well as feeling that he is wrong in his limp attitude to contracts. Like you, I am delighted by SWs successes after being concerned when he initially got the job. Where have I criticised SW?
I am irritated equally by those who whine over nothing as much as those that never complain no matter what. None of this makes you a happy clapper nor me a doom monger.
As for your last paragraph, the less said the better. How is mentioning those of an overly positive disposition in any way less acceptable than mentioning those with a clear anti IL agenda?

What annoyed me most about the criticism of SW last year was that with better luck last season we would have won Super League. And whilst he made mistakes in his first season some people didn't seem to want to give him a fair shot.
In all of the euphoria of the double we should recognise that winning the CC involved a large slice of luck. If that same luck had come SWs way last year he could have won the double then too!! In other words I think he had bad luck last year and good luck this - and it probably evened out.
I think that by and large the fans, and the media especially, ascribe too much into short term results. Looked at with 20/20 hindsight last year was a huge learning curve for SW and he deserves his success this year - but if the charge down from Matty's kick at 16-14 had gone to Warrington....'"
Sorry but none of the above makes you a happy clapper, it's far too balanced and perceptive
Now, if you happen to believe that Lee Mossop suddenly become a crap player when he bailed out of his contract......

| Quote: Wigan Peer "I don't see the "Happy Clappers" as a bunch of mindless drongo's, as portrayed... But rather, fans who are able to see and appreciate the bigger picture. And, who also realise that we no longer live inn the 1980's.'"
I haven't referred to the mental capacities of either camp. All I wanted to point out was the fact that Cruncher has himself been critical at times but took it upon himself to declare himself a happy clapper and to chastise the critics. He is nothing of the sort. He just finds the "anti" camp more irritating than the overly "pro" camp whereas I am damning of both.

16304_1526976105.jpg [size=100:2md8k3b3][b:2md8k3b3]'Do you remember when we had that meeting in Orlando? We talked about how we were knocked out the previous year by Leeds. And at the end, I asked you one question. "Do you want to be a semi-final team? Or do you want to do something special?" You all said you wanted to win. But talking is easy – it needed you to believe. It needed you to work hard – harder than you had – and make sacrifices. You did all that. you worked for each other. You stuck together when it was tough. And because of your efforts, you sit here tonight as champions. I'm proud of you. Be proud of yourselves. You've done something special.'

| This thread is getting a bit 'Lord of the Flies' for me, so before some of us start worshipping a pig's head on a stick (again!), take a look at this and remember why we all love this great club as much as we do and how much it means to our coach.
No happy clapping offence intended

Would love that in a frame. Wonder if the Observer would send the image if I emailed them?

Much better than the split shirt madness!
That is definitely something worth framing as a memento

| Shaun joined Madge as assistant in 2010 then became head coach 2012.
That's four rugby seasons with three trophies to win each year, obviously over the four years twelve opportunities to win silverware.
In those four years, of the 12 available Wigan have won six trophies, LLS 2010 & 2012. C Cup 2011 & 2013 plus two Grand Finals 2010 and 2013.
Warrington have won three.
Leeds two.
Huddersfield one.
It's a results business for coaches and those six trophy wins in just four years are exceptional.
