Current thoughts - Mago out or get running up them plantations, get fit or get rid. Maybe a back up halfback, someone with a bit of experience on a short term deal. Big tall strong running second rower, like a McMeekin or Sironen type back rower.:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_20333.gif

Quote: Steve Ella's Beard "I think you're totally dreaming about the potential australians. Do you realise how much the top players are actually earning? The NRL operates on a 4.1 million dollar (currently £2.48 million) cap for the top 25 earners, and an additional 350k (currently £211k) for the NRL squad players outside of the 25. In addition to that, there's 150k (currently £90k) total allowance per club for payments by 3rd parties related to the player at the club (limit of 50k per player), NO LIMIT to earnings for the players own intellectual property (sponsor having no connection to the club, no club logos, independant of player staying at that club) 12.5k (£7.5k) per player per origin appearance etc.

The very very top are pulling in more money (potentially significantly with the right personal sponsorship) than the £300k you're talking about, playing in a nice sunny country near to their family, AND getting to still play origin and pull on the green and gold.

You have to remember, when we saw the likes of Kenny, Sterling, Meninga, Lewis etc, they were playing during the Australian off season supplementing their wages (in the same way that Hanley etc did the same in Aus) whilst not having to give up playing Origin or for Australia.

I seriously think for a current tier 1 superstar Australian (Thurston, Smith, Inglis, Slater, potentially Hayne) you'd be looking probably a fair amount more than £500k - Israel Folau (and really he's not in the same class as those mentioned) is reportedly being offered 1 million (~£600k) per season to go play either RU or AFL, and won't even have to leave his own country. If they're gonna give up rep football, then the real superstars would probably be more tempted to go play RU in Japan or France and earn a lot more than the rumoured Folau contract.

The only way I could ever see a player of that Calibre in super league is if the ARL changes it's origin/rep selection policy (never going to happen as that would mean admitting our league was a good standard), the player is losing his place due to age, or he's done a Greg Bird type thing and is banned from playing in the NRL for 12 months or so.

Still, I'm with you, it's nice to dream and would be bloody good to watch
My facts and figures were just pulled out of the air really but you catch my drift.

End of the day young players who have come through the academy shouldn't count on the cap.

Personally, I am more than happy with having players like Pat Richards and Amos Roberts in the side who aren't world class, but are of the best imports in Super League and so as long as Wigan continue to purchase overseas players who are one of the best in the side and of the best in their position in Super League I am more than content.

Right now due to the salary cap and current exchange rate signing genuine World Class players is out of every Super League clubs reach. We might get lucky and sign a Trent Barrett or a Steve Renouf every now and then is about all I can say.

Just because we can't sign current World Class players doesn't mean we will have a boring side and it doesn't mean we are limited to just our academy setup/Wigan area. We can look at the best of English talent - Michael Shenton, Richard Owen, Louie McCarthy Scarsbrook and Jamie Langley are all out of contract this year and I wouldn't complain if we signed any of them. Then of course if we invest in a thorough and comprehensive scouting system we can find the next Mike McIlorum (Leeds) and Lee Mossop (Cumbria).

Investing in youth is definitely worth while as exemplified by Sam Tomkins, Lee Mossop, Joel Tomkins and Sean O'loughlin all penning down long contracts and all of them are either currently involved in the England team or will be in the future. You also have to hope that due to the new dual registration system that a few lads who are on duty will come back and make it at Wigan - Liam Farrell being a very good example. So far we have (or have had):

Shaun Ainscough - Castleford/Widnes
Liam Farrell - Widnes
Ben Davies - Widnes
Stefan Marsh - Whitehaven
Josh Vievers - Whitehaven
Chris Tuson - Castleford
Josh Charnley - Blackpool
John Walker - Blackpool
Neil Holland - Blackpool?

You can bet Joe Mellor (once fit) and Ian Thornley (once he's finished at college) will also go out on loan.

Dependant on how Richard Owen comes back from his injury all 4 would be targets for me. I think the times coming to be replacing Carmont and Shenton would be perfect and then Owen could possibly be looked at if Phelps isn't to be retained(i'd keep him without question but his niggling injuries aren't helping his cause).

Out of the 4 Jamie Langley would be the one i'd really love to see us bring in. He is on top form this season and would do a great job for us both in the second row and at prop. He is so strong and has a fantastic work ethic. As for LMS he looked to be going abit stale at Quins and a move to one of the bigger clubs would be the best thing for his career imo. I thought he had a big game against us last week and i'm sure Maguire and Wane could get plenty of improvment out of him.

Scruton or Lima next season will do for me. Plus a new centre. Re-sign Fielden and Coley 1 year each, Roberts to FB, Goulding/Ainscough to the wing. Carmont to retire, Feka 1 more year. Hansen, McIlorum & Prescott 3 years each & Hock to come back half way through after his ban:

Lima/Scruton

Carmont to retire and yet he is in the first 13 icon_wink.gif I think you mean Gleeson.

Wouldn't mind Shenton really but I think Goulding may take the spot with a winger coming in.

I have no doubt that Maguire will snap up some young Melbourne talent.

The words "young" and "talent" when used in the same sentence certainly don't make me think of Rugby, well not first anyway.
