Just out of interest what is the history of the Wigan shirt, what was your original kit and when did you start wearing hoops?

I've got a book about the history of Wigan R.L.F.C and it says in "The Wigan Wasps Football Club was born at a meeting at the Dicconson Arms on Monday, Sept 22, 1879 attended by.......New club colours were blue and white hooped jerseys."
Also here
The club initially played in blue and white hooped jerseys before changing in 1886 to the now famous ‘Cherry and White’ hoops that are synonymous with the club today.[/i"
In the past hundred years, or so, we have had the odd variation on that shirt though. We've played in a plain red shirt & a red shirt with a white V amongst others.

Cheers for that Pemps. I've seen the classic pictures of Boston in a plain red or cherry shirt and one with a white chevron but wasn't sure if it was a one off kit for a final. I didn't realise the cherry and white hoops had been around since 1886, I thought it was from the 1940's.
Our lot have always worn an assortment of styles, ranging from primrose and blue hoops to white shirts with P&B chevron or trim. We started off with black shirts then moved to primrose and blue vertical stripes when the club moved to Wilderspool. We've never had a consistant style, a trend which continues today (althought we've noever worn primrose shorts at home - till 2010 that is).

| Can anybody else remember Wigan playing in an all white kit?
I think it was v HKR at Leeds in a Challenge Cup semi final.

| A couple of things about the new shirts
1. I'd be disappointed if it didn't include cherry and white hoops somewhere
2. Whatever it looks like, other fans will say it is the worst shirt they have ever seen and a clear indication of the impending doom of the club.
Having said all that, win something and they can play in the Warrior/vomit/paint accident shirt from a few years ago and I wouldn't complain.

If you have a copy of 'Central Park Memories' page 57, it shows Boston scoring a try at what looks like Central Park ( I recognise the 'ringside' seats ) wearing all white shirt, shorts and hooped socks, IIRC we wore this kit a few times in the late 60's.

Found it. I'm sure I remembered it.
Pemps get it made.
Go to page 63. The Tommy Gentles try. The lady stood up applauding (just to right of the touchjudge) on the ringside is my mam.

just found it
Abit more detail like cherry stripes down the arm and it would be good as an away kit

If you go to page 78, I quite fancy getting a limited run of those sweaters that George Fairbairn is wearing.

Excellent, look at the team sheets of Wigan and Saints just above, what about the back three of the packs in both sides, Cherrington, McTigue and Evans for us, Terry, Huddart and Karalius for them, and they say the game is getting better !!!!!
p.s. Wembley kit 1959 for me please Pemps !!

| The Wire & Leeds kits are class.
Bulls kit is awful, Quins is the same!
Im hoping ours are good, but this seasons where so good im not sure how we could top them.
Im not like the idea of red shirts/black shorts, but we will have to see.
A yellow away kit would certainly be different, but with the Mecca logo on would eb a touch bright me thinks!!
