| Very underrated. He's one of the few players I've ever seen play so well at centre and wing.

| Very unlucky for Goulding, he was one of the best centres Wigan have had for a good few years, Charley was very lucky to be playing with him.

Darrel was a wingers centre, he was never going to go striding 50/60 yards down the channel but he had this ability to be disciplined and run in a straight line thereby giving his winger that yard of space. This is so different to centres ( or sometimes makeshift centres) who push out and try to go round the opposition which in most cases means the winger is frozen out.
Sarginson to his credit seems to try to be the former, I really like how when he gets the ball he seems to check as if he is coming inside thereby confusing the defenders which gives Burgess that little bit of space on the outside.

| Good luck Darrel .
Being a centre / winger he understood his winger and how to put him in . An art form sadly missing in centre play these days .
Pity the HKR and Wigan (and all other) fans couldn't have given him a big thank-you and send off on Saturday in Newcastle .
Regards , EW

| Sad news, and I wish him all the best for the future.
He was one of my favourite players over the last few years, dependable on the field, a good bloke off it. I'll never forget his performance in the 2010 GF where he made his opposition look like schoolboys. Thanks for the memories Darrell!

| Give me Darrel Goulding ten times out of ten compared to some South Sea Islander centre whose only thought is run over their opponent and use brawn at all times because of their lack of any true rugby brain. I could name dozens of the latter but very few in the Goulding mould.
He wasn't a world beater but he was excellent at making the difficult look easy and natural. It's no coincidence that since he left Wigan ( and just before due to injuries) Charnley's try scoring has reduced significantly.
A great club player who was appreciated more I would suspect by his team mates rather than the fans.

Or maybe Charnley's try scoring dropped off when Sam left the club. I think we'll see a different Charnley again next season when Sam returns.

Or maybe Sam had Goulding and Carmont.
Let's see how effective Sam is with Gelling and and Sarginson neither of whom are centres in the purist sense

Yeah ok, Sam owes it all to two centres, that's why he's become a world class FB previous MOS etc.

Don't think he was suggesting that was he?
But Sam will find out when he comes back that the players he used to play with, haven't necessarily been replaced by better. That MAY make it harder for him to shine.
I love Sarge. ~His industry is second to none. He is a real team player. But he's no George Carmont.

Very harsh on Sarge if you ask me, a lot of players wouldn't come close to how good Carmont was for Wigan. I think going forward, Sarginson is great. He's got quick feet, good hands, it's just a case of making the right call on whether to pass or stick for him. It's his defensive side of his game that's the worry for me. Sam will be just fine. (like anyone was really doubting that he wouldn't be!) Gells will relish having a full back who'll be able to put him through gaps and will be very hard to stop for someone of his size.

Sarge is largely blind going forward. He needs to be a winger or a full back who gets the ball for the scoring pass, not the one whose position ought to be about giving it 70% of the time. Carmont was simply a proper centre. And as such he stood out in a league that has very few proper centres.
Gelling isn't a wingers centre either. I am sure someone can post some stats about how many assists the pair of them have but whatever the numbers I am not convinced.

And what was I suggesting firstly about Daz?

I'm not saying all the assists have come from the centres but they can't be doing too bad a job when our wingers have 30+ try's between them in 17 games.
I sat here around this time last year and didn't think either Gelling or Sarginson would make a centre. Fast forward 12 months and both have come in leaps and bounds with the subtleties of the position and both are young enough and inexperienced enough in the role to kick on a couple more levels.
I doubt George Carmont at 23/24 was the same George Carmont we knew at 30.
