23997_1287161421.jpg
Great game of rugby league. Fantastic atmosphere, Wigan were breathtaking and dominant in all areas for the first 25 minutes, coupled with us making alot of dumb mistakes, then fortunately they brought McIlorum on which helped us back into the game. I thought some of the tries we scored to get us within two we're out of this world stuff. Towards the end we had to force it a little and we had a few things go wrong, i.e Monas kick on the first for King and Solomona going off who was causing havoc. Wigan were clinical in their eventual execution of us. Proud of Wire today and gave us a little glimpse to the future. Silverwood was awful as per, but I expect no less. Tomkins is a world class player and by far the best english player in SL. Wigan are a champion side and would be a worthy winner of taking our title as challenge cup. Good luck over the next month and a bit.
:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_23997.jpg |

| Green Vigo.
I have seen it mentioned about the three trys agains Leeds, what made them special was the way he waltzed round the great John Holmes (Leeds supporters opinion), Wigan had a great scrum half by the way that day ,Jimmy Nulty.
Next, the comment he is proberbly in Weatherspoons.
Next, he was dancing on the table naked.
Next, in the Post Office with a toy gun.
Next,waste of talent.
Next,should of been deported.
All of the above proberbly true, but all opinions of a person have two sides.
This is my version why Green Vigo went off the rails.
In December 1971 I went to South Africa on a three year contract as a boilermaker and I was staying in a Union mad town South of Joberg ( Afrikaans dominated)
The blacks where treated like dogs with no rights at all.
I used to get an English speaking paper and even though all Union at least it wasn't a white only dominated paper.
After being there about six months the name Green Vigo kept coming up in this English speaking paper as being something special, these comments where shot down in flames by the Afrikaans press, the headlines said NO BLACK WOULD EVER GET NEAR THE SOUTH AFRICAN TEAM.
The way these people where treated you would never believe,I was given a "boy" to be my labourer who allways called me "Boss" and when I told him to call me by my first he said he could'nt dare.
I came home after 18 months because I was uneasy with what was going on,this was early 1973.
I told fellow Wigan supporters I knew about this black player who but for his colour would be classed as a great winger and because of his colour was treated like a dog.
Lo and behold a couple of months after getting home it was announced that Wigan had signed him. He made his debut in the Wigan 7s in August 1973.
What I am trying to get across was the tremendous change in his lifestyle that he had to get used to.
To go from being treated like a dog to treated like a celebratery was to much for him.
I met him after he had been here about 12 months and he would still slip into saying Boss when he spoke to me.

| In his first game he ripped it up big style in the 7s, followed by a Locker Cup "friendly" against Warrington where that nice Mr Chisnall thought it would be a good introduction to England if he smashed all Vigo's teeth out. The stories after that are legendary, and probably all true, but as the previous poster said what do you expect if you put a lad in his position with a hard drinking bunch of rugby players.

Sally Cinnamon - Treat the Saints forum as you would if you met a girl from St Helens. Best policy would be to avoid altogether but if you absolutely can't resist temptation then take every possible precaution.:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_36121.jpg |

While I wasn't present i've heard other accounts of South Africa at that period and can well believe way you saw may have severely impacted in the psychology of a player when brought to this country and put on a pedestal. People refer to the likes of Terry Newton (RIP) needing support after his career ended, people would do well to consider your perspective/argument before passing judgement.

| Green Vigo was hailed as the new Billy Boston when he came to Wigan from South Africa and I remember being exited about his arrival as Wigan were on the slippery slope to mediocrity at that time. I know that Wigan Rugby league enrolled him at the Government Training Centre in Hindley to learn plastering and my dad, who worked there, always had a good word to say about him. He certainly was a long way from home in Wigan and booze got a hold of him resulting in him underachieving in the world of rugby league. It is probably true to say that Wigan may not have been the ideal place to prevent this happening as things at the club were not great. I remember one time watching Wigan play at Leigh and Green Vigo breaking clear only to place the ball down on the 25 yard line thinking it was the try line! What had looked like the chance to get win against Leigh turned into Wigan being the laughing stock of our neighbours - one of many unpleasant memories of that period.

| For those of you who hav'nt seen the clips of what he was like Google in the following.
Top 101 great tries & a kick part 2.
The Leeds match is the third sequence in,well worth seeing what a great winger he was.
Sad to hear how low he is now.

I thought it would be a fake, of course. Just some of the thing I've heard about him may suggest not too.

| Was often drunk around the Scholes area. He is/was a larger than life character and apart from the odd drunken brawl was usually very friendly.
