A intentional forward pass is a penalty

He says, if the 'passer' is infront of the ball when the 'catcher' recieves it, it is not a forward pass due to the momentum rule.

The 'momentum rule' is the way Stevo describes the ball having forward momentum even if it's passed backwards.

Basically if a player is running forwards, and passes the ball sideways, it will travel forwards relative to the field because the ball will have the same forward speed as the player who passed it. Its a tough thing to try to explain in words.

Momentum is a poor choice of word really, and thats what confuses people, as well as it being a tough concept to visualize. The ball has two components to its movement, a forward compenent from the player who passed it running forwards, and whatever speed the player passing it gives it by passing, so a combination of these two components gives it a resultant speed that is "forwards"

That's why ref's look at how the hands point, rather than use markers.

Re the poll I think we have to leave it as it is, because unless there is a camera that is exactly level with the ball then there will never be a definitive answer.

Except of the forward momentum you have described which makes the ball travel forwards on the pitch but not relative to the players.

Yet again, it's scary just how many RL fans do not understand the forward pass rule.

No, there is no momentum rule, but yes, momentum is the reason a pass can travel forward in relation to the ground but still be backward (in relation to the players).

Nah because it's really obvious which ones are forward and which arent and those that clearly arent wouldnt need sending. I'd say in a game with 10 tries then no more than 1 extra than normally average would need to be sent up to vr.

If it's really obvious then surely there's no reason for the video ref, as the ref/touchjudge should just give it.

A lot of tries are scored from within 10 metres and the mojority of passes to set up close range tries are short and flat.

Momentum is mass multiplied by direction. It obviously doesn't have anything to do with the mass of the ball (or players), only the direction. Therefore, the "direction rule" would have been a better name. That's all I was saying.

The problem with including it in video decisions is that the camera would have to be in exactly the right position to be able to make a correct decision, which is virtually impossible, and in fact from different angles passes can look forward or backward. I guess that's why the RFL decided that the VR could not make decisions on forward passes, which is corrcet IMO.

Correct, but the difficulty would be proving that the pass was forward, which you could only do if the camera was in the right position.

If the camera is not exactly level with the players, then the direction is difficult to judge, particluarly when the pass is rising or falling in height, because that can make it look like the forward/backward angle is different from what it actually is.

Should have been at Wire match today to see how refs (Thaler) can't handle forward pass rule (and knock ons) multiple times......plenty of em from Hull and no callforthcoming; we do one (and score a try) and get pulled up.....
