| Quote: XBrettKennyX "Back on topic, a fantastic performance by Wigan Athletic that only the bigotted, predjudiced and one-eyed amongst the people cannot see or appreciate.
As for Dave Whelan, looks like he is neither. At the height of his footballing success he mentions that he hopes that Wigan RL also win the cup.
When was the last time that a Wigan RL chairman said that about Wigan Athletic?
Credit where it is due.'"
Can't agree more, its quite sad and pathetic how upset some fans are over Latics winning the FA Cup.
Quote: XBrettKennyX "Gutted Wigan won. Only team in Wigan is the Warriors'"
Quite sad how it bothers you so much, and your no different to some of the Latics fans that people are bitching about on here. Hate to tell you but what they did this weekend will always be one of the greatest ever achievements for our town.

| Firstly congrats to the Latics. But this post is about DW. Just because he hopes the Warriors do well doesn't make him such a hero. The guy only thinks about himself and profit. Because of him we don't own our stadium, and play in one named after him. Also thinking of the town he has wiped a top union team off the face of the earth in Orrell. What other chairman has paraded themselves before an FA cup final taking lime light of Martinez. He's not got anyone in mind only himself.

Surely that's Jack Robinson & Maurice Lyndsay's fault? It was there mismanagement that cost us our stadium. We wouldn't have anywhere to play if it wasn't for Whelan.

They sold the club to Wheelan after making it the Greatest RL club the world will ever see! I was still young and ignorant to a clubs finance in 99. I'm sure he would have still made a profit at Central Park.

This is a very good counter argument.
Totally with you on this one.

Central Park was in the dark ages as a stadium. Look how much money Odsal and Knowsley Road cost their teams. We're at a state of the art stadium that costs us very little in monetary terms.
I'm no fan of Whelan and I'm not particularly happy about the way Orrell went, but I can't pin this one on him.
As a United fan and a Wiganer, I'm delighted with Saturday's result though.

Then I suggest you do a bit of research into what the club's finances were like at that time. In any case, we didn't sell to Whelan, we sold to Tesco, to pay off the debts. The board actually turned down an offer from Whelan to redevelop Central Park instead of selling it.

Thanks for the knowledge Geoff. No research needed now. I cant recall Tescos owning the club though. The whole of Wigan knows that the land was sold to them!!! This doesn't change my opinion on DW. Maybe he'll let you have a picture with the FA and Challenge Cup(fingers crossed) for sticking up for him. But he would probably charge you for that.

| Does anyone honestly believe that Whelan would have redeveloped Central Park?
Bearing in mind the over-run in cost of the Whitbread / Boston stand, I honestly believe that Whelan would have sold Central Park to Tesco, pocketed the profits and still moved to a new ground.
That's the way he has always done business, bought low and sold high.

It's an interesting one I have to admit.
Could he have gotten away with doing at Central Park what he did at Edge Hall Road?

| If memory serves me right the Wigan RL board were on the verge of taking the Rugby club to play their games at the Reebok, love him or hate him if it weren't for Dave Whelan there wouldn't be a professional RL club in Wigan today.
His book is very interesting on the subject of who sold Central park, one or two of you should give it a read, it may just surprise you!

Yes but where would that have been built?
The council were determined that only one stadium was to be built for the use of both clubs.
