I will be laughed at for pointing out that the greatest RL player in the history of the game was better than a short d mouthy gobe.........
Ok whatever you say pal..............'"
My god, such conviction to go with not even half an argument.
How about you put Johns back in the day without his super fitness, playing with the 5 yard rule instead of 10. Playing on muddy pitches in the middle of winter, with a ball that weighed about 8 times what a modern day ball does. Do all that, and still be the most gifted half back of your generation by a country mile.
Now, give Murphy a perfectly dry track, 5 more yards to work in, far superior fitness levels, improving his natural speed even more, and give him alot more stamina.
Now, we'd start to see very different players in each respect, if you stuck them in another era.
Fact is you've no idea what so ever how each player would perform, you can only go off what they did when they played.
I'd love either player, even better I'd take both. The fact is though, I can't comment fully on Murphy as I never saw him week in week out. That's why I won't make stupidly bold comments based on a player I've really got no idea about.

| Current Saints players I like/respect even though I know I shouldn't:
- Cunningham: great player: inspirational captain and he has done bloody well to be at the top for such a long time.
- Graham: never gives less than 100% and one of the best props in the competition.
In stark contrast, I can't stand Long or Wellens. Both can be brilliant but I don't like their attitudes and I feel the latter has been lucky to play in the team he does (well as lucky as you can be having to play for St Helens. ).

| Wiganers I have coveted despite myself;
Hanley - all time sporting great IMHO
Offiah/Robinson - always a frisson when they got the ball at their peak, you always wondered if they were going to score
Botica - rarely seen a more metronomic kicker

| The fat bar stewards argument.
Get hold of the 1962 tour dvd.
Round, Boston, Ashton, Fox, Sullivan, Bolton, Murphy,
Watson, Sayer, McTigue, Huddart, Edgar and Johnny Whiteley.
All superb gifted players.

Fair enough Rogues, but they would get their ar$es handed to them today.
Now, ofc it's difficult to compare across generations.
However, I feel that Hanley, Betts, Goodway, Bell
would easily slot into todays SL
I cannot say the same about the team you cited.
*shrugs*

Willie Horne - Best player ever that bloke and a true British legend
Captained GB when we could beat he Aussies
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willie_Horne
The argument as to whether past players would cope in todays game is a non starter for me because had those guys been around today then their physique, skills & mentality would be entirely different.

Best Scrum Half Gregory or Leaulia???
Now I know your taking the Mick with your flippant "What was it again" Attitude, but you won't get off the hook so easy!

 Honestly m8, I am not.
I am just drinking whisky, responding to multiple MMS and IM and it's all a tad confusing
Ok so to answer ur question.............
I would say that Lulu would murder Greg in most aspects of the game.
However, Greg would be the more creative imo, and his fitness failings would be covered up by the rest of the team.
In short, I would rather have Greg at 7 in the current Wigan side.
Then again I think TL is a 9 not a 7......................

So 20 years on and despite massive Fitness improvements and tactical awareness improvements and the Fact that Greg played most of his career playing very different rules of Rugby League against Beer Bellied (In your words!) Part Timers you would still have him over a World cup winner of the Modern Era!
Tell me how can that be possible given all your previous uneducated responses earlier regarding Players from previous Era's?
I'll tell you why!
Because he was Better than Lealuia by a Country Mile, End of!
I have the 62 DVD that Rogues was talking about earlier and Yes it was a very different game with different attributes etc but there's one thing in Parallel throughout the Era's that will never change!
Once a Good un, alway's a Good un!

Well whether you would call me previous comments "uneducated" is a matter of opinion.
You asked me a question, I gave you an answer.
Now had the question been "would I prefer Greg versus Andrew Johns?"
.......
Johns by a country mile.
Would I prefer Johns to Murphy
Well from the (admitedly brief) glimpses of what I have seen..............
Johns by a mile.
I'm not sure what point ur making?
