| Quote: wigan pie man "my take is that a lot of the fans who started the chants were kids, and now they are 16 they cant/wont pay the big extra cost of a season ticket. Add to that the fact that they are easy to keep an eye on in the designated area ?
The "designated" area was never going to work (as i predicted and got shot down), singing isnt something you can orchestrate, unless its in church, its a spontaneous thing, brought on by a feel good factor. Its a sign that someones happy. Sitting there freezing your cods off on a cold friday night isnt condusive to feeling happy. A lot of fans are sat watching the game and trying to keep warm. As others have pointed out, all seaters contribute to that. Terraces at least let you jump about to keep warm and maybe give you more incentive to sing.
Another theory that i have posted before when this thread comes around at this time of year is the weather...a warm fan is a happy fan..the warmer it gets , the more we feel like singing.
Anyway, all is not lost. Theres a twitter campaign that i saw highlighted on facebook to get the singing going again. Its a group of fans who feel the need to stick in the disclaimer.." we are no way connected to the Brigantes"..that bit actually worries me.
Engineered singing, campaigns etc..wont work. Groups of fans that want to get together and sing WILL work, but only in unrestricted seating areas, and only if the fans who want to sing recognise the fact that not everyone wants to sing.'"
Why ?, if they said they were all 'formerly Brigantes' surely that would worry you ?

| I go along with the lack of consistency in the squad as a good point, but I've said for a while the two key factors for me are a decent away following to engage with and tense, meaningful matches.
Wigan proved last year that losing games is largely irrelevant as a top four finish was all that mattered. Whilst I'm not saying Wigan are intentionally losing games, for me it takes something away from the spectacle when you know a defeat isn't the end of the world and more significantly the players and coaching staff know this too. It's not their fault, it's the system which provides for only a handful of games every season with any excitement or significance.
Every week has to matter to stir up passions and emotions in supporters which then generates atmosphere. The atmosphere at the three home games so far has been flat, but then the games didn't matter in a competition that has 27 friendlies.

| The thing i used to look forward to when we was at home was standing up and signing and the players do respond to it. Being told to sit down constantly when i was at the back of the south stand was really annoying, obviously if you in the middle of the stand its understandable that it would annoy people behind you as they would want to sit down.

| Would you say the lack of terracing is a factor?

yeah i would say that probably contributes to it, its hard to get a song going when your not allowed to stand up. In an ideal world Wigan would have a 20,000 stadium with a terrace called the 18th man haha.

| Have the club/Latics made any comment about installing safe standing areas? Making the south a standing terrace would be fantastic

| the atmosphere last 2 times we have played there has been awful ( fair enough results didn't go in your favour) but there always used to be a half decent atmosphere at wigan, last 2 visits i honestly didn't hear any noise (apart from booing) from wigan fans.
i think a lot of games now, in football as well as RL are sadly lacking in atmosphere at most places. watching the hull kr game on tv, the wigan fans just seemed disinterested, most were just sat applauding, even good tries didn't get people of their seats.
i think it's pretty sad,as part of the experience of going to football and rugby was the chanting/singing and general atmosphere's in grounds.
it's not just wigan though, our home games are like funerals now, most people are just happy to sit and watch the game and applaud tries and moan at the officials, the atmosphere at our place was a lot better when we had the hardcore 2/3,000 and in games when we upset the big boys, everyone was up for it and the atmosphere was very good at times, now even when hammering leeds most of our fans just sit there motionless.
by the way, a genuine question here, but what happened to the 'brigantes'? i know there was bother at our place a cuople of years ago, did they just give up after that?

I have my theory what has killed the atmosphere. I have thought this for a while.
It is I don't think the fans can identify with half the Wigan players on the pitch. Many are too new for this.
'"
Youi make a good point: used to be practically all the players had their own chant for when they scored ("Sam will tear you apart"; "Richards is superman"; "Oh Tommy Tommy"etc) but that seems to have more or less gone.

Thats down to the fans frustration with the team and the disbelief that we've gone from scoring for fun to looking like the players only meet up 1 hour before kickoff and Brian Noble takes us for that hour.
I'm just glad Wigan are a bit off the pace too otherwise it would have been embarrassing.
Wane and his convincing comments are kidology at their grandest though.
Trying to think of the last Wire v Wigan game that was as boring and skillless as that?

| Maybe not 'convincing' on the scoreboard but the performance was. Wire are lucky that Wigan didn't quite click, or it would have been a proper dusting.
Early days though, both teams will be amongst it in September.
