You said that people who are offended should not attend, so clearly it is.

| I think there should be a points deduction for Wigan to send out a strong message that using profanities is not acceptable in a family sport.

| Quote: Deano G "I find the Brigantes bashing and similar threads like this a bit baffling to be honest.'"
Nobody has mentioned the Brigantes, but if they are involved or to blame they're as open to criticism as anybody else aren't they? Or is this leading to another "you can't have atmosphere without swearing" argument?
Quote: Deano G "I may be getting old but I remember in the 90s whenever we played Leeds and Bradford inflatable sheep would be thrown around the Popular Side while a noisy rendition of "All Yorkshire men shag sheep" to the tune of Ilkley Moor would be sung by half the stand. This was often followed by the lyrically less demanding "Sheep, sheep, sheepshaggers" chant or a further rendition of Ikley Moor but this time "Baa baa baa ba baa, baa baa baa baa SHEEEEP!". Equally the "f&ck off you Saints" chant was heard at Stains matches at least as often then and there was an offensive song accusing a leading Saints player of being a paedophile luring in children with a cheeky smile and a packet of sweets, that one was very popular.
Other songs regularly and very noisily aired back then at derby games included "He's only a poor little scouser" (you still hear it but not as often as 20 years ago) which while not obscene is far worse IMO than the use of the f-word in the "5 times in a row" song, as is the traditional northern air "In the referee's home" which threatens murder and arson against the referee and his family.
If RL has been a cosy, family sport it hasn't been like that for more than 20 years. You have to accept that your kids are going to hear bad language and more worryingly be exposed to cultural influences towards violence etc and the odd bit of chanting and singing at RL games is not really a big factor. RL is a positive influence and the inevitable songs and chants are just something we all have to deal with (while enjoying them in many, but not all, cases).'"
To be honest I'm slightly bemused by how swearing can be so important to someone that they're unwilling to put it on hold while there are children present.

| Wigan like most RL clubs has a very large percentage of women attending games.
Possibly as high as 40%.
Football would give their right arms to have that percentage of women at matches. RL has always had a much higher percentage of women attending than football.
Maybe that's why we don't suffer the hooliganism anything like the albatross that has hung around footballs necks.
RL fans are normally better behaved. Is this due to all the women ?
I wonder how the women like the foul language that is being argued about on this thread ?
If they go, and I suspect most women don't approve of bad language, will our crowds behaviour follow footballs behaviour ?

Whilst I'm sure the vast majority wouldn't approve, let's not paint them whiter than white. In last years Challenge Cup Semi Final, I was stood next to two young girls (early 20's) who shouted out a few things at a certain Saints player that frankly shocked me, stuff I've not heard on terraces in over two decades.

| Whilst I'm not saying using foul language is a particularly nice thing to do or anything to be proud off. It's something that I've just accepted as part of the game since I started watching any sport. And when I was younger I understood that using those words was "naughty" and didn't join in with that kinda stuff until I was older. You can argue till the cows come home that bad language should be a bannable offence at a sporting event or whatever but, no matter what "competitive" sport you are watching live, where people are allowed to drink it's going to happen. Maybe take up snooker or crown green bowling and you won't have to worry about being offended by fans chants.
Of course the club aren't going to come out and say "oh it's fine, swear, be violent do whatever you want" but if they started kicking everyone out who says the odd F word during a match there'd be few people in the grounds at all.
I'll be honest enough to admit that I occasionally use the F word at the rugby (although If I know there are really young kids nearby I do keep a lid on it), but I certainly don't use other "stronger words" which are unnecessary. It's just an instant reaction along with the frustration that you feel in tight tense games. and I bet a lot of people on here have reacted in a similar fashion too and used the F word at a game when you've been on the pop and a call hasn't gone our way. Now if you are talking about people doing nothing but using foul and abusive language for 80 minutes non stop and being really over the top then I'd probably feel a bit annoyed to, but I'm really surprised that the "five times in a row" chant has bothered you so much when all rugby teams have been singing songs far worse than that for as long as I can remember.
I bet your kids hear far far worse on the streets and in school. I can't believe people are gettin so upset about the F word. if we ever start hearing Racist chant's (I doubt we will, and and certainly hope we dont) then we will have something to be offended about.

| Quote: Jimofwigan "Once again I took my family to see my team play our arch rivals Saint Helens. I think I will need surgery to wipe the smile off my face at this hard fought win. Well done to Wigan's best defensive effort this season.
I was totally shocked at the foul mouthed chant of five in a row. Come on lads there is no need for the explitive F word. You could used bottled it, Blew it , threw it, or anything else. If you can't come up with a chant that uses clean language ,just forget it get on with your lives and leave it to someone that can.
The stewards bottled it by not telling them. Why play a tape every match telling us this is a family sport and that foul and abusive language is not acceptable and let the idiots Effing a chant get away with no warning. I say to these people who think this sort of language is common and OK that quite simply it is not. We had 7, 8 and 5 year old children listing to what is totally unacceptable language.
ALL I ASK IS THAT THE PEOPLE WHO RUN WIGAN WARRIORS PRACTICE WHAT THEY PREACH AND DO THEIR JOB'"
Can not believe this has got 7 pages so far. Its a sports game swearing happens. Either your a Saints fan pretending tb be a Warrior (and who can blame you) or you do not get out much.

| Ifthe stadium announcements say don't swear. Then it's simple.
Don't swear.
In the past they didn't say don't swear.
If you can't express yourself without swearing then you need to get a life.

Nor can I.
Quote: tank123 "Its a sports game swearing happens. '"
It's not mandatory, and since I take my kids I'd prefer that it didn't. What reason can anyone possibly have for preferring it did?
Quote: tank123 "Either your a Saints fan pretending tb be a Warrior (and who can blame you) or you do not get out much.'"
Because a true Warrior would actively promote swearing at a so-called family event. Actually, going by the responses in this thread you might just be right.

| A good bench mark in this type of argument is:
Would you swear at your kids at home (the f word)?
If you don't because you don't want to set a bad example, yet swear at a rugby ground in front of other kids, it seems a bit hypocritical.

| Quote: MattyB "Again, I will state that abusive chanting was rife in the eighties, this isn't a new thing. Probably even worse as we had racist chanting thrown in as well...(at least we didn't get bananas thrown on the pitch yesterday, like we saw thrown at Knowsley Road years back).
And let's not get misty eyed about how trouble free games at Central Park were(and on the road). Some of the worst violence I've ever seen in my life at RL games were back in the mid-late 80's / early 90's.'"
Just because there has been swearing in the past doesn't make it right. There were genuine complaints yesterday and the stewards calmly asked people to cut out the bad language. Don't be surprised if they decide to start ejecting people in future.
