I know, who'd have thought that after a year away from st helens, the first year in their brand new state of the art ( eusa_silenced.gif ) stadium, St Helens still cant sell as many season tickets as Wigan Rugby League. FIOS. Wonder what the comparison will be in 2013 when the novelty has worn off? icon_lol.gif

Yep, nearly 2000 more season tickets for this year than last year's average, who'd have thought indeed.

[quote="headhunter":lnxdgxk2]Union people are idiots. They almost universally accept that league is a better, faster game played by better athletes, yet for some reason they continue to disregard and belittle it. That game is tedious as hell from start to finish. If he'd ever played or even bothered to give more than a fleeting chance to league he would realise that the game is far more 'technical' than Union ever could be. Booting the ball into touch, scrummaging and forming rucks and mauls aren't areas that involve any skill, technique or mental capacity whatsoever. These are clumsy, outdated facets of the game that are also extremely uninteresting to watch and thus have to be defended in some way by people who are too prejudiced to see the truth.[/quote:lnxdgxk2]:

Why this cant be seen as a good thing rather than constant sniping trying to claim we are bigger than st helens is beyond me!

Its obvious to anyone despite their recent glory, that we're the bigger club, so why do we keep putting them down and trying to have a pop at them?

I hate Saints when it comes to derby day and them winning anything, but in terms of them making progression off the field and becoming a bigger club in their new stadium im all for it.

As they have managed to get as many ST holders as us for the new season (would expect both clubs to have circa 10k by the time the season kicks off), it should mean saints can hit an average of around 15k in their first season (which I actually hope isnt novelty factor- but hope they keep hold of them just as wire and hull did when they moved grounds, so that we have a strong St Helens, rather than a team pottering about with 9-10k attendances even when they win the league - as in previous years).

How good would it be to have both Wigan and Saints averaging 15-16k?!! Personally I think it would be great for the game - Just because I dont want them to beat us or win things doesnt mean I dont want to see a strong St Helens, as I want to see every team in the SL build and be strong.

This season could actually be a record year for attendances with Saints and Salfords new grounds should see a push in crowds, along with Wire's extention and Widnes in for the crusaders. The bigger attendances can be on the whole the more im for it, so yes I hope Saints do average the same as us, and I hope they help to smash the 10k average gate figure this year for the whole of SL!

Wigan and Saints both look like they'll sell 10,000 season tickets each for the first time in a very long time (if ever).

Hardly something to snipe at from either side. Along with teams like Leeds, Hull, Wire etc the leagues looking in reasonable shape especially when you consider improved sales at clubs like Huddersfield who've struggled in the past and a club like Widnes who'll pull more fans in then Crusaders.

Exactly - I can see attendances panning out something like the below, which could be fantastic for the league and would give SL an average attendance of over 10k, with 6 teams averaging over 10k and 3 just falling short, hopefully to push on in the next few seasons and break the 10k barrier. With a bit of effort and push from Catalans / Huds / Hull KR, they should be realistically looking at breaking the 10k barrier in the next 3 years which would give us NINE teams averaging over 10k, and hopefully the remainder (Wakey / Salford / London) getting their act together to get reasonable crowds of say 7k, looks very good for the league going forward!

Wigan 16k
Leeds 15k
Saints 15k (New ground with 10k ST should mean 15k is achievable - especially when you would expect Salford / Widnes / Wigan / Wire as sell outs)
Hull 13k
Wire 13k (should get sell outs of 15k against widnes / wigan / saints with near sell outs for Leeds & Salford further to their extension which should push an average up to around 13k hopefully)
Bradford 12k (with their cheap as chips season ticket incentive again)
Catalans 9k
Hull KR 8k
Huds 8k
Widnes 7-8k
Cas 7k
Salford 6-7k ( icon_razz.gifRAY: the new stadium can at least make their gates reasonably credible)
Wakefield 6k
London 5k ( icon_razz.gifRAY: the re-branding has some effect)

Before knocking saints i want to big well done to them as our season ticket sales when we moved was nowhere near 10k if i remember our average was only 10536 so both clubs have come along way in attracting fans.

I think you need to put that into perspective though. We were one of the first clubs to move into a new stadium and a lot of our supporters resisted the move away from Central Park. We lost quiet a few supporters for a number of years and I think a lot only came back during our battle against relegation in 2006.
Since then fans of other teams have realised that a new ground is the only way forward and clubs fans at the likes of Hull and Wire have embraced the idea and inceased their fan base. Saints are in the same position and as such they should experience an increase. I am not knocking that, good luck to them, but the situation is slightly different to when we moved out of Central Park.

I agree. I still know fans to this day who became disillusioned with the way the club was being run and how the ground had been handed over 'on the hush' and haven't been back since. Where as all Saints fans were desperate for a move to a modern stadium, Wigan fans were desperate not to move away from their spiritual home, instead opting for full renovation (bearing in mind the club had paid millions upgrading the Boston Stand).
