| What a fantastic interview. It is very long and covers a lot of ground. His passion for Wigan and his love of the players shines through, as does his love of the game.
I fail to see what he has said about Madge that is in any way detrimental. They are great mates. SW admits he is not a natural assistant. He saw things from Madge that he liked and things that he didn't. So what? Everyone can learn from the best, but everyone has faults too. And Shaun admits it when he makes a mistake.
I like the way he never mentions the sending off at OT. He doesn't hide behind it. He says we made 6 breaks to Saints 1 and we should have won. No excuses.
I have to say, I love the bloke. I am so pleased he has signed a new deal and that he will be with us for the next three years at least. Yes, he makes errors of judgement, I don't think the WCC film was good for him at all, but with Waney you have to take him as you find him, and I admire his passion and honesty. He is a leader in the true sense of the word.

I'm not surprised Wigan fans love him; his love for Wigan and hatred for Saints is extremely evident in almost every interview he does.
One thing that Saints haven't had in recent times is a coach with real passion for the club who understands the local rivalry; hopefully that will change with Cunningham in charge.
Wane does border on disrespectful at times though. He allows his hatred for Saints to cloud his judgement and he comes across quite petty. Take this interview for example - listing Leeds, Salford and Warrington as rivals for next year but not mentioning the Champions just comes across as silly. Also his insistence on referring to Saints as "them" or "that lot" during interviews; it's unprofessional and quite childish of him.
You can't knock his passion and commitment to Wigan though.

| Good read. With regard to debuts I wouldn't have expected many next season anyway other than Gildart who I'm pretty sure he has already said will debut and maybe Wright/Lever depending on injuries and whether Logan stays. When you look through the positions we generally have reserves and 2nd reserves both having already debutedGildart/Bateman
HB - Williams/Hampshire and Doran
P - Too many to name
H - L.Tomkins(?)/Doran and Wright
SR/LF - Patrick/C.Farrell and Lever
Must say I'm not too keen on his comments regarding Madge, whom I still rate as the better coach of the two.

Fair points YG. My feeling is that he has a deeply held respect for Saints and that the 'hate' stuff is pantomime villain territory. When KC got the Saints job SW rang him to congratulate him - don't forget that.
Of course Saints are the biggest threat next season, it is probably implicit, in that he doesn't need to say it really. He won't believe for a minute that Salford are a bigger threat than Saints.

I agree with that, especially the last sentence. I just think it comes across as childish that he chooses not to mention probably the most obvious threat. I might just be being pedantic!

I don't understand this comment. He praises Madge and says they are best mates.

Me neither and I thought the same thing.
He only mentioned there things he'd learned not to do as well and then goes on to say that he was a frustrated assistant coach and wanted to control things.
Hardly a scathing attack?
But then again you can always find fault with something if you want to I suppose.

For sale full Saints kit (circa 1989). Shirts in pristine condition, but shorts badly soiled.
For 27 - 0 you get a trophy
For 75 - 0 you get sod all.

Agree.
Surely all Wane is saying is that there were some things HE would have done a little bit differently than Maguire. That's not a criticism just stating fact.

| SW was publically fuming last season when Wire 'trained as Wigan' against the Roosters in a pre WCC training session. I hope that whilst Souths are training at Orrell we dont do similar 'playing the Saints way'...etc. No need to lower ourselves to Wire's standards.

Long Live The Pearl !!!!: |
|
| Shows his true intelligence in the first 2 questions. Says he never played any sport all the way through just league! Then after saying that he says he played for at pats and orrell rugby union! Also he isn't a patch on Maguire. Wane wouldn't have been half as successful had he not followed on from Maguire! Maguire has changed the whole way super league teams play today and also the intensity that Wigan play at!

Maybe he views being called "The Ape" by the Saints fans in the same way and gives back what he can, after all it is childish of the fans.
I thought the need for Flower to have "rehabilitation" as out of order from McManus, a prop forward throws a couple of punches in retaliation and it's a rehabilitation job?

Let's not derail the thread and bring up the Flower incident. For what it's worth I think both Lenagan and McManus handled the situation really well.
Back on point, I agree fans calling Wane "The Ape" is childish; however fans aren't expected to be professional, coaches are.

That was a ridiculous reaction from Wane at the time. I doubt you'll hear any such childish nonsense coming out of Saints irrespective of how souths choose to prepare for the game.
