It used to be very common some years back. Mind, the pubs in those days used to be packed out, not like today.
Eric Ashton used to be a sales rep for Wilsons IIRC. Billy had the Griffin. Bill Ashurst had a pub. Even an ex-wire player had the Royal Oak bottom of Standishgate near CP. Didn't Andy Greg have a pub ?
It was a way of bringing in punters by way of their celebrity, plus you wouldn't want to cause any trouble in their pubs.
To be a pub landlord was quite respectable years ago.
For the older fans, Ken Gee had a pub at Pemberton for many a year. |

I see no controversy in ex-players running pubs, but I see total comedy in Gary Schofield doing it.
Can't you just picture him behind the bar in all his cheap, tatty jewelry, with a trophy cabinet in pride of place - containing only one Yorkshire Cup medal - offering his views on everything that's happening in the world, and all of them stupid and wrong. |

I just think it reinforces our "small time" image in comparison with other sports when top flight internationals end up working on a building site or something similar. |
