I've never been critical of Goulding until this season, in fact I was a big fan of his and was saying he should have been in the England squad in 2012. I'm not entirely confident that Gelling/Sarginson/Thornley provides enough quality at centre but I've been equally unimpressed with Daz this year, he looks unfit and those stats that Rogues has posted are pretty abysmal. I wouldn't have been on here screaming that he should go but now that it's been confirmed he's off I can see where the coaching staff are coming from.

True but I doubt either of those said clubs would want to sign gelling or sarginson either and therein lies the point. Goulding is the only out and out centre we have. I can't see gelling or sarge doing a grubber play like goulding did on the biggest stage of all to put charnley away and put us in front. That type of natural centre play comes from playing the position for a number of years. This is no way a dig at gelling or sarge who I think have done a reasonable job stepping in. Gildart looks like he has potential but is at least a year or two off first team level yet. If we're not going to sign anyone I think this leaves us weaker in an already weak position.

Easily the best centre at the club, let him play without injury and watch him get Charnley away again and again and again, like he has done for the last 2 years.

Rubbish, Goulding has been average for most of his Wigan career, he had a few moments of being above average but that's it.

Goulding might be average for a centre, but centre is a specialist position and we haven't had a decent centre since George Carmont. There is a dearth of centres in the British game today anyway, so unless we have a decent centre 'in the pipeline' it can't be a good thing to lose an half decent centre can it ?

So what? He still isn't good enough to play centre for Wigan on a regular basis. He has been a cheap option as he came through the system. Now he wants more cash he's on his way.

Not too convinced by Gelling or Sarginson but at least they show desire and Thornley is better.

Well Thornely can't play both sides of the pitch at once so despite the fact you're not convinced by the three other players mentioned as his potential replacement you are happy to see him leave thus leaving the side weaker. Sound logic that.

absence really does make the heart grow fonder - few months back thornley was copping all sorts on here - doesn't run his size, doesn't seem motivated, not sure why we brought him back, whats all the fuss about etc etc

If SW plans to replace Goulding with Gelling he needs to give his head a wobble. Gelling is not good enough for Wigan and ought to be shipped out quick.

There isn't a better centre at Wigan than Goulding, to improve the team we need a signing.... Gelling isn't as good, but if he reaches his potential he will be better. Simple as that as far as I'm concerned.

I would have Gelling in the second row. I don't think his concentration and skill level is there for a centre. He could well be a 'tackle buster' in the SR.

clueless fella, hes a good defender, good pace and gets his winger away.

Clueless, he's an average joe who performed at his best (above average) for a season and a half, and has been steady over the past few years.

He hasn't progressed from there and obviously the club feel he isn't worth extra money.

We need a strike and not someone who just passes it along the line.

Right choice by the club and Goulding.

Back on topic, Goulding was solid but far from spectacular. Can't get excited about this to be honest.

George Carmont was a superb centre, his replacement should have been Joel Moon. Wigan missed the boat on that one.

Looking to the future, both Oliver Gildart and Jack Higginson look very good prospects, but are a few years away from continuous 1st team selection, and that's only IF they continue their improvement.
