| Quote: Cruncher "
Criticism is fine, but when there doesn't appear to be much to criticise for, it strikes me as just more of the rampant negativity that certain trypes of Wigan fans seem to revel in. Just off the top of my head, I also remember having to listen to bitter criticism by certain Wigan fans of, among others, Graham Lowe, John Monie, Ellery Hanley, Shaun Edwards, Steve Hamson, Graeme West, Martin Offiah, etc. Even ebullient characters like these could do no right for some Wigan fans. So what chance a guy who's main fault so far seems to be prudence?'"
It's always made me laugh being a Wigan fan, I can still remember some bitter thick guy stood behind me who used to shout 'Anley, thys a load o e' anytime he made the slightest error, although not quite so politely as the swear filter on here

The Communist Cap - dragging down success and aspiration to the levels of those who cba.: |
|
| Firstly the only two people who are "entitled" to know what is going on are IL and BN.
The real question is not whether an announcement has or hasn't come out, it's what has happened in the background.
If rumours are to believed that Nobby found out from a friend that IL had approached another coach then that is unfortunate, but it happens. The real measure of IL as a person is how he reacted to this, once it became clear that BN knew about it. I don't know the detail around this and I suspect 99% of people on this board also fall into that camp.
With regard to a replacement, I think it is virtually nailed on that BN will move (I wouldn't be surprised if BN was the one who decided to move on after the above fiasco, but that's purely conjecture on my behalf).
I don't know enough about this Mcguire guy, but I have to say I would be a little disappointed. Wigan is the biggest club side in RL and we need a big coach. Next year we will be competeting against sides coached by Mick Potter, Tony Smith, Brian McClennen etc. We need to compete with this knowledge and experience. I don't want an Aussie "prospect" coming over here and learning his trade, I want the finished article.
In these days of the CC chairmen have it relatively easy in terms of financial exposure. They effectively get the players "on the cheap". Time for IL to put his hands in his pockets and get us the coach we deserve.

From I'm hearing down the road, McGuire wouldn't have too much trouble outcoaching Mick Potter.

Maybe it's more to do with the players' attitudes down the road.
He didn't do too badly at Catalans.

Noble didn't do too badly at Bradford, and now look.
McGuire would do nicely for me. He's highly rated in a very demanding theatre, has trained under the top men and been coaching far better players than Leeds, Saints or Warrington have. The fact that he's young means that he still has something to prove. It also makes him a realistic target.
It's nice to imagine that we could get someone like Wayne Bennett or Des Hasler, but if we're of a mindset that no-one less than that will do, I think we're bound to be disappointed.

I work in St Helens and practically all the fans want Potter gone, you cant help but feel for whatever reason, the Saints players havent bought into what Potters about. Perhaps he doesnt stroke their ego's enough - who knows, what is true is that they, whilst still a threat are a force on the decline.

Well that is probably because there isn't an anti-IFL campaign and people are not always attacking him. To suggest they are is as silly a generalisation as to suggest he gets everything right, which I am sure you would not do.

That is a total nonsense of a statement.

Noble took over a good team. Potter didn't.
Noble did really well over a number of years at Bradford.
Potter performed minor miracles at Catalans to take them where he did. Just look how Walters has done this year with arguably a stronger squad.

| Quote: jonh "The comparison's with Mo make me laugh, and although he has a genius at the time he failed to adapt to the modern era when the cap came in and the result nearly saw us relegated from the League.
Mo is/was a showman he liked to create headlines liked to ruffle a few feathers, and while it did work, it had its time and sadly for him and us that was pre cap.
'"
When it comes to this particular issue, the coach, IL is operating under the exact same constraints as Mo was. None.
There is no salary cap that affects coaches so going on about Mo and the cap as regards this issue is irrelevant.
Mo would have probably sacked Noble after the loss to Celtic. Would you have complained if IL had? I doubt it.
Under Mo the situation would have been sorted by now IMO and if it wasn't and we were in the situation we are in with the coach, the lynch mob would have been out for Mo by now.
I think its a bit hypocritical the way IL is given all this leeway. It's not as if in his short time in charge IL has been particularly great is it? Poor signings in the most part and persisted with a poor coach. He has got the right idea with the youth side of it so its not all bad but it isn't universal brilliance either.
We are coming to the end of Mo's influence on the club in terms of the squad and so IL's excuses for not delivering a good squad and a good coach are coming to an end as well. The honeymoon period is over and he needs to start delivering. That isn't an implied criticism either, its just a fact he has got to start doing so and the coach situation is the first real test.

Potter bought into the french thing and used that to his advantage. Walters brought in Perry who at best is his mate from Aus, went all out to get Bird and bizzarely made him captain and generally seemed to want to play players in different positions each week.
Potter has problems at Saints because their board wont buy the players they need and he has to deal with the loss of Long and future losses of Cunningham & Wellens, all off the back of the fans already having written him off.
