GI wasnt medically retired but got that from the NRL - ‘The NRL had decided to treat the Inglis case similar to a medical retirement, whereby the full payment to the player is included in the salary cap for the season in which he is injured but not the following year’ - So now that he’s not retired, this no longer applies?

I'll still stand by my original comment however, I can't see any insurance firm willingly paying out for a pre-existing injury.

Insurance companies dont tend to pay out willingly for anything. How recently have you tried to claim on your car or home / contents insurance .

what they will do is increase the premium that is paid to get cover. For example, my father in law had a history of heart problems, so his insurance to go abroad was significantly greater than i would pay. I would assume that something similar would apply with sportsmen. If they have a known injury, then the club is likely to pay a higher premium for someone with an existing condition v an 18 year old with no existing injuries.

i wonder if it is like getting insurance if you live on a floodplain or near to a volcano where you are covered for everything except that specific risk. So if George drowns or is hit by a lava bomb then no problem.

Think we're all making big guesses about things we don't really understand if we're honest. The fact we see so few instances of players medically retiring should tell us that it's not that easy to do. Wigan are hardly in the unique situation of having a crock under contract.

Hopefully Burgess retires as does Clubb and we use that money to buy a couple of decent props. For some reason we cannot seem to recruit established props and why do we keep signing Clubb up? He's 4 years past his use by date, he wouldn't get in the St Pats team.

There's nothing to stop players getting an education alongside their playing career. I know it's Union, but Jamie Roberts notably trained as a doctor while playing, which is perhaps among the most labour intensive forms of education out there. I think Liam Colbon got a degree while he was with us. Even if training is 4 hours a day (which I doubt), that would still leave ample time to study part-time.

Instead of just spending your life swiping at what others say, what is your constructive opinion on the club signing Burgess?

He had and passed a medical in Australia, a process that is quite normal for players playing "down under" and coming to play over here.

Here's what I expect will happen.

George Burgess will retire on medical grounds. Nice words will be said by all parties involved but there will be a non disclosure clause in his contract release, again something that is quite common in these type of circumstances.

edit :- There may be some indication when the accounts for the year are published, which could be in one or two years time.
