| Quote: Cherry.Pie "I think playing one of Williams or Hampshire is a risk that simply doesn't need to be taken. They've only had a handful of games for the under 20's and were playing in the under 16's last year. We're not in a position where we have to take risks so I can't see them being called upon.
Having said that, of the two Hampshire looks the better prospect at the moment and would be the best bet out of the two as his running game is better, and if you stick a young player into the halves it's best to have them playing a simple running game rather than trying to organise or dictate play.'"
I wonder if Wane will risk them before the end of the season. The U18's touring team to Australia gets picked next week and I think leaves in early July. They will be away for around three or four weeks so it'll probably be August before either Hampshire or Williams are available (I'm assuming they make the tour squad and will be very surprised if they don't)
Hampshire really looks a class player, pace, evasiveness, good organiser and an excellent goalkicker, but at 17 it would be huge step up.
Williams is a little further ahead physically. I'm not sure yet if he will be a 7 or 9 but he looks a very good prospect.
I think they along with Burgess may get a game in the nines at Orrell on Tuesday (5 p.m. kick off)

I hadn't realised about the under 19s being picked for Australia next week,if Wane decided to give him a bit of game time against Widnes he may feel that he is torn between two stools. By that I mean having the chance of game time in Wigans first team and the chance of a lifetime trip to Aus to play against his own age group.
Maybe it would be better to let the lad go to Aus and let him develop at his own pace, but this is all hypothetical any way.

Just a point, five of the six Wigan lads (Tierney, Burgess, Hampshire, Williams and Sutton) who played V France U18's are all first year U18's i.e. still only 16 or 17 years of age.
Only Connor Farrell was second year.
The frightening thing is that this years Wigan U16's are an even better squad.
There is a LOT of work going on below the surface at Wigan.

Is that how clubs are supposed to deal with injuries? Sign overseas players who haven't played in ages and weren't even good the last time they were in this country or bring back a player who was on his last legs before he even started his final season?'"
Well it certainly got me laughing when Deacon and Orford were mentioned..it's only a joke though..isn't it.

I was asked which of those Wigan players in the England Academy team were most likely to make it to the first team and I ended up listing them all. Every single one of them has enough potential to go far. Obviously nothing is certain at that age so things can change but it seems like the best group of players we've had at Wigan for a while.
I wouldn't have thought Wane would risk either Hampshire or Williams in the first team this year. I think he will wait until next year and rely on Mellor for the next few games and possibly Powell if he recovers from injury in the next few weeks.
Of those under 18's I think Burgess is the most likely to make the quick step up. He already looks to have more about him than King or Murphy and it wouldn't surprise me if he was considered above them in the pecking order if he continues to impress. He's got the height to make him a threat in the air which King doesn't have.

No that's what all the Internet no-nothings wanted to believe. At the time this was supposed to be happening Myler was actually living with his tv personality girlfriend, amazingly everybody who claimed to know all about Myler's private life knew nothing about his celebrity girlfriend.
HTH as always.

Thanks for that Rogues, its nice to know that Wigan have so many young uns coming through. I have noticed during my time coming on this site that you post more things about the young players than anything appertaining to the first team, which is nice to see that us owduns are kept informed.
I see that the 9s is a 5pm kick off on Tuesday,I hope to get up there.

Just the rumour I read on here.
Nice to see that you think 'tv personality' and 'celebrity' are a badge of honour. Says a lot about you.

And that's why moving SOL to the halves will be the best option, at least for the time being.
Faz can do a first rate job covering at 13.

I think they'll just stick Lockers in at 6 and give Farrell the loose forward shirt. That would open up a fulltime spot on the bench for Jack Hughes and his form probably deserves that.'"
