| Quote: Finfin "I still have nightmares about the new signings for the 05 season - to replace legends O'Connor, Cassidy, Connolly etc - Vialeki, SeuSeu, Davico and Moran. We are just beginning to recover from such a disastorous policy.'"
It's sad though because they could have been good signings. Davico was just disastrously unlucky, Moran was a good player in one role that we tried to play in a totally different one (at which he was poor), Vaealiki was a silly gamble after the serious injury he'd sustained, and Seu Seu was just past it by the time he reached us. Just shows how risky the transfer market can be. Heck even Greg Florimo was a good player from all the evidence available, he was just poor for us.

| Why the downers on Sculthorpe? He beat Saints single handed in 04.

Very surprised by your inclusion of O'Neill, he actually had a good record with us, remember him playing a big part in beating us to at home when he joined widnes in 2003 which made it particularly gutting.

Agree with you.
O'Neill did a lot better than some at Wigan and did a decent job at stand-off, he certanly gave more value than Mathew Johns when it came to consistency. I remember Jules having a wow of agame against Saints at the JJB, he just tore them to shreds that day and made up for his failure to pass the ball to the inside man at Knowsley Road - the only game Stuart Rapers Wigan lost against Saints.
However if rumours surrounding his departure are to be believed then we really had no choice but to release him.

Hargreaves was bobbins for us and I haven't seen anything since to change that, Prescott suffered with loads of injuries over the same period and had a great season with us in '09.

| Mathers - pleased when we signed him. Even more so when he left.
Williams - sh*te.
Botham - 2006
Vaealiki - useless waste of jizz.
Whittle - Was awful in that game against Saints. Not his fault I guess but we've had some decent wingers.
Brown - the next GB 6? MY
Moran - see Mathers and treble it.
Malam - I remember him at Saints running full pelt at Micky Higham and then being knocked back 10 yards and behind the line
Reber - played in 2000. Enough said.
Howard - couldn't break wind
Wilkes - works hard at Wakey, but was dreadful for us.
McDonald - Why?
Jonkers - Dutch people shouldn't play rugby
Bibey - how has this guy won 2 Challenge Cups?
McAvoy - running out of players so Macca gets in.
Mestrov - was our 'go to guy' when we wanted one of their players in the bin
James - see McAvoy

| I don't understand why Sculthorpe is getting slated I thouht he did a decent job for us, gave away silly penalties but so did Terry Newton and he is regarded as the best hooker for Wian.

| The interesting thing about this thread is that, after accepting we signed a load of no-hopers and aussies on retirement plan, we also signed players who were effective at other teams (most notably Moran, who was brilliant at London, but also the likes of Fielden and Howard) who Wigan "developed" into being useless.
Then we let go players who have gone on to do well at other teams (S. Long anyone?).
Altogether the recruitment and development of players since the glory days has been pathetic.

What is also apparent is that we signed players and then played them in a different position than what they excelled at with their previous club or asked them to fulfill a different role at Wigan.
A change of position can do wonders for a players confidence but at the same time it can also destroy it.
