I don't want to compare the two in terms of ability, as I don't think there's a direct comparison yet - when Edwards was 20 he was surrounded by some fantastic players.
In terms of impact on the team in their first season, then I think Sam has had more, but then again he's 20 in his first season Shaun wasn't.
Not quite so straight forward at all. One thing I do think they have in common though is their desire to win, and their frustration when mistakes are made.
Shaun at the hight of his powers was without a doubt a better player than Sam currently is, Shaun in his first season? ...... lets see Sam develop and then we might be able to make a more fair comparison.

load of $hite, Sam had played and started more games than Tim Smith even before Smiths injury. Bilko's site proves it. |

He played at Wembley when we lost against Widnes in the 1984 final, the one where Joe Lydon scored a bloody fantastic try for Widnes against us.
And it was at fullback because Steve Hampson was injured, something that would turn out to be a curse like re-occurrence for him. |

Yep!
After Hampson got injured pre Wembley!
Couldn't get a game in front of Mark Cannon/Gary Stephens at that point. 
And If I'm not mistaken that was a team out of it's depth that day just like your prediciting Wigan Will be out of theirs of they got to the GF!

yes he was a fantastic player, captained England school boys in Union and League (from memory) and to be honest Sam's showing all the signs of becoming one as well. Obviously you can't compare the two directly till you've seen Sam develop throughout his career. |

edwards 1st season at wigan you`ve ask god knows how many times....you could see he was going to be a good un..may be tomkins will but he will never be in the same league as edwards.....happy now

Yeah Widnes far outclassed us that day, was great when Joe came home two seasons later. The Shaun that you're comparing to les, started to come into his own in the 86/87 season when we signed Andy Gregory, and Hanley was absolutely magical.

And I could have been a good un in that team! And I was only 16
Point is at the same age they were Bother VERY GOOD players!
Will Sam go on to be as good as Shaun?

We can hold our heads up high around town. Not for us the ignomony of having once supported United, Liverpool or Everton and then shamelessly casting our previous loyalties aside for a 2 bit fly-be-night outfit with no history or standing in the town. He is very similar to Edwards same attitude and passion but sam is his own man and lets compare in a few years and enjoy that we have a fantastic player on our hands. Edwards was brilliant maybe sam is the next brilliant player after Edwards time will tell!!! COME ON WIGAN!!!
