| Frank Stanton, Was very clever in what he did knowing full well that in those days defence was just unbelievably strong, i think even i could of scored for fun if i was prepared to do something different
One thing i agree with Schofield on, is the way try to play against the Aus test team, we try to play them at there own game and we dont succeed, The sydney test (Where fielden got laid out) was a great example of GB Being agressive, kicking the aussies to death and throwing the ball around.
The only thing we could not do was back it up and thats where we fall down and the players need to have that more intense competition here in SL

It can be argued that Murphy was a major help, for Wigans tilt for the top and the building bricks that made us the 8 in a row champions of all we surveyed, when he was our coach. It was Murphy who signed Edwards.
Again, Murphy who is arguably the Uks greatest ever RL player and a bit of a mouth gets slagged off .
I didn't hear/see the Schofield interview, but the likes of Schofield and Murphy and many others aren't given the respect due their standing in the game. Far too many slag off some of our greatest players. That's not good.

In my "Rugby League: Where are they now" book he's down as a bricklayer, which is a bit of a shame really. Even if you don't like him, it's a shame that RL wasn't the platform of financial success it should have been (imo) for our players, especially when you compare it to Soft Mick who plays 5 minutes for Grimsby Town FC and never has to do another days work in his life, it just doesn't seem right. As for Garry, he might talk a bit of crap but I grew up watching him and when he pulled on that GB jersey he was magic.
btw I didn't see the programme as I've been away, but it sounds like he stuck true to form. Better on the pitch than off it Garry was.

| Ill never forgive the clown for kicking to the corner, last minute in the 2nd Ashes test @OT 1990. That ball should have been kicked into touch or maybe even a drop goal attempt to wind down the clock, but oh no Gary have some cunning plan to give the Aussies the ball back. They duely responded by big Mal going over with seconds to spare. Nob head!!!

He was a site manager last time I heard. he came out of the game with a bit of brass but managed to pish it all up a wall when he was a publican.
Last time I saw him he was screaming at his son Jonathan who was playing for Cas Academy at the time telling him what he should be doing, was a bit embarrassing.

He did kick it into touch didn't he? Might be wrong, but I'm sure he did.
As for the dg, he didn't think he'd get it. And if it had failed the ball's still in play, as in kicking for the corner.

I'm not sure what points these two posts are meant to convey. Do you mean to say that running a pub is a fitting post-RL "career" for legends such as those?

It used to be very common some years back. Mind, the pubs in those days used to be packed out, not like today.
Eric Ashton used to be a sales rep for Wilsons IIRC. Billy had the Griffin. Bill Ashurst had a pub. Even an ex-wire player had the Royal Oak bottom of Standishgate near CP. Didn't Andy Greg have a pub ?
It was a way of bringing in punters by way of their celebrity, plus you wouldn't want to cause any trouble in their pubs.
To be a pub landlord was quite respectable years ago.
For the older fans, Ken Gee had a pub at Pemberton for many a year.

I see no controversy in ex-players running pubs, but I see total comedy in Gary Schofield doing it.
Can't you just picture him behind the bar in all his cheap, tatty jewelry, with a trophy cabinet in pride of place - containing only one Yorkshire Cup medal - offering his views on everything that's happening in the world, and all of them stupid and wrong.

I just think it reinforces our "small time" image in comparison with other sports when top flight internationals end up working on a building site or something similar.

It happens in all sports. Only Premier League footballers earn enough money in their sporting career to be comfortable once they've stopped playing. It reflects the attitude towards education in sports in this country as whole. If you're good at sport, being good at school doesn't matter
