| Morgan is a decent coach, thats it. He's done a prety decent job at Hull KR but hasnt really taken them forward in the last couple of seasons, not Wigan quality at all and it would be a massive step backwards IMO.

| Quote: Dave26 "I can't see past Wane getting the job. The way Lenegan has responded to the question of who our next coach will be says it all for me, when asked that during coverage of the Bradford cup match the way he responded (imo) all but said Wane would get the job. I think, presuming Wane wants it, that he has earned the right to be the Head coach, by working his way up and consistently being successful. Morgan is a good coach, but to me his appointment would seem a strange one, I don't think he could improve (or at least prevent a downturn in) the way we play, and imo were he to get the job it would be a step back from the setup we have now. Saying that we can't be sure that Wane would be successful, but I think he deserves the chance. Only IL knows though!'"
I think this underlines the problem that Madge going early has left us with. And at a time when we really didn't need it.
Intead of looking to consolidate our position of newly-acquired power, we're looking to try and preserve it.
IFL knows he needs to appoint a successor who can continue the good work without any hitches. But he's also in a predicament, because many fans - rightly or wrongly, we've yet to learn - are reacting as if there's a moral imperative to give it to Shaun Wane.
Suppose IFL and Maguire have assessed Wane's involvement to date, and are concerned that he isn't ready for the position yet?
Unless IFL appoints someone who has a real track record of success, and from the UK that could only be Tony Smith (which isn't going to happen), there will be a deluge of criticism, and that must be really bugging him at present.
Personally, I'm not excited at all by the prospect of Justin Morgan, but he's probably the best of an unimpressive bunch.
Not a good time to be the Wigan chairman.

| Morgan's a good coach IMO, I would have him at Warrington if we needed to replace Tony Smith.
It is not easy to bring a club up from the lower division and not only survive but thrive in Super League and Morgan has made Hull KR competitive every year, he's overachieved with the resources he's had. If he had been an ex Wigan player the clamour for him to return to Wigan as coach would have been building every year.
Like Cruncher says it is not a good time to lose a coach, these days there aren't that many good coaches on the market, the best available is Brian Noble. Look at Saints appointing Royce Simmons, a guy who had not been a head coach for 10 years since finishing with the wooden spoon at Penrith...would Saints have made an appointment like that a few years ago? Would Leeds have made an appointment like Brian McDermott a few years ago?
At Warrington we are very lucky to have Tony Smith and with hindsight it looks like the business with holding onto Cullen a year too long and then appointing Jimmy Lowes as a stop gap was because our board had probably eyed up Smith's likely availability after the World Cup and were timing their move. Wigan finding McGuire was pulling a rabbit out of a hat and stealing a march on their rivals but it is not easy to do that.

| I think that is a fair point as witnessed by the appointment of NRL assistant coaches like Salford are doing ( so it worked out ok for Wigan but I suspect that ill prove to be a one off). Using SL as a stepping stone to a full NRL coaching position does not do a lot of the British game.
The worrying trend is that there are few, if any, good British coaches around and even more worrying there does not appear to be even a supply of British assistant coaches looking likely to step up as well. There really does need to be a fundamental change in the appointment of coaches over here and their development (perhaps we could see about finding some system of getting young coaches over to Aus for a period to learn methods there).

Unfortunately, well-intentioned though I know your post is, it kind of proves my above point.
Ian Lenagan is in a position to judge whether or not Wane can do the job. We aren't.
You can't make these appointments based purely on sentiment. The good work that Maguire did must now continue.
Wane could turn out to be Gregory mark II and how cool would that be, but he could also turn out to be Betts mark II, which would undo all the good work currently being done in a matter of months.
Like you, I'm not inspired by the thought of Justin Morgan, and I really hope this is all just gossip. But if he is appointed, we ought to get behind the chairman and recognise that he's made a tough decision for the sake of the club.

| Morgan isn't anywhere near good enough for Wigan.
Just look at HKR's performance when they came to Wigan a couple of weeks ago.
They were down to 15 men after 20 mins with Clinton and Webster injured.
Morgan continued with the same tactics for the rest of the game as if it was 17 v 17. He had a good half back out there in Dobson who can change a game anytime yet he didn't use him or change his game plan.
Hopeless!
Next Please!

Perhaps so but who out of the available coaches is good enough for Wigan?
We keep hearing about how SW 'deserves' the job but im still not convinced that he is the right man for the job despite the obvious popularity vote.
I don't want us to become the new Leeds and go backwards, they would of been much better off sticking with BM.

So if the Hoff is waiting to see who is the coach for next year, does that mean he might stay for the right man?
Even though we have Gaz Hock coming back, he is one of a core of players who are on the team sheet every week, for me. I would love for him to stay.
