| I'm glad he's back in RL. Charnley's too small to be a good international winger nowadays, but can be a very good club winger. It'd be interesting to hear his views as to why RU didn't work for him, but its good for RL that not every code-hopper succeeds as it will put a bit of doubt into both RU clubs and younger players thinking of switching.
As a complete OT aside, its rumoured that the Eels have been talking with Ryan Sutton. Might just be gossip because the Eels have had a disastrous start to the season.

| Quote: exiled Warrior "The only way I could see Wigan being interested was of there was major doubt over Manfredi getting back to full fitness, otherwise we would be overloaded on wingers. Although Charnley did play centre a few times he was never a regular there and would be a gamble to sign him for that position.
I do think 20+ tries might be a bit optimistic - if he anything like any returning players it will take a while to get back to full RL fitness and getting back into the swing of RL - never ceases to amaze me how so many returning players struggle after a spell in RU.'"
Is manfredi back , forgot about him , hes a beast !
I think Charnley 20+ tried is easily achievable , hes a great winger and knows how to beat a man , a lot of his tries came through beating people rather than positional play, which for a winger is easier than anywhere else imo . If Warrington are up there and good then JC will be a big part of it , if its Wire from last season then no chance.

| A good signing for Wire, very strong out from the back, looked back to his best before going to RU. its a bit of stretch to be cllaiming he is a good goal kicker more miss than hit

Tierney is an interesting comparison, someone who else wasn't good enough for Wigan.

In the current squad based salary cap game , Marshall is easily good enough and he will get better .

Agree about Tierney. Did a great job filling in at the back end of 2016, but always got the impression that he was playing above himself.
Always tricky for a club who produces as many as we do to decide which players are worth persevering and those which aren't. Still have arguments with my dad about whether we made a mistake letting Kev Brown go when we did.
Anyway, without wanting to go overboard on Marshall, fair to say that he's one of those 4 out of 5 star players where you need to make a judgement about how he's likely to progress. Personally, I think he's already an above average SL winger, but in terms of potential he's got it in him to be a very good player, albeit probably not a very well rounded one.

Marshall seems like a great lad, Wigan product. But when I watch is game I see errors which are part of a learning curve (knock ons/positional play) but I also see issues which I think will stay will him due to physicality, under the high ball and defence were he'll be a liability. It's a shame, but overall I don't see him as a long term 'Wigan standard' player. Like Tierney he may have a future in SL, but not with Wigan. His pace is eye catching, but his overall game just isn't there.
In opposition we have some big wingers who are impressive in both attack and defence, both Manfredi and Burgess are especially safe in attack and D, with Davies always improving and becoming a great talent, good all-rounder.

I feel like people just assume his defence isn't good enough just because of his size.
I've not seen anything this year to suggest his defence is worse than either Davies or Burgess. I've seen both of them drop high balls (Davies at Warrington especially), and Burgess' defence hasn't been great to be honest, even if Gildart was at fault for some of the defensive decisions.
Just as an aside, I know we cant determine everything with stats, but they do give some guidance.
Marshall: 5 tries, 2 assists, 17 tackles, 2 missed tackles, 31 carries, average gain 10.32 metres, 6 clean breaks, 5 errors.
Burgess: 4 tries, 0 assists, 15 tackles, 6 missed tackles, 23 carries, average gain 8.43 metres, 4 clean breaks, 4 errors.
Davies: 3 tries, 0 assists, 11 tackles, 2 missed tackles, 87 carries, average gain 8.69 metres, 7 clean breaks, 5 errors.
To me it seems that Davies gets through more work coming from our line than either Marshall or Burgess. But missed tackles Burgess is the worst so far. And errors they are all quite even; Davies has played more games, than the other two, but I guarantee that our left side sees more ball than the right, and to be honest our left side also probably is targeted more defensively (especially when Marshall is playing).
Take from that what you will, but for me this year his defence has been fine, and his attack was great, I'd have him over Burgess at the moment who just doesn't seem as fit, or as quick as Marshall. In addition to the fact that he's missed more tackles, and made only 1 less error so far, having played fewer games in the process.

| Marshall’s a very good superleague winger. Whether that says more about superleague then it does about him I’m not sure. He’s lightning fast, works hard, has a great change of pace and some good ball skills. His defence needs a bit of work but he’s not on his own in that regard. He’s been put under the microscope for dropping a few high balls this year but that’s an issue for all our wingers.
By ‘superleague standards’ we have 3 very good wingers currently available to us and 1 who is potentially the best of the lot to come back from injury (tough to judge how good Manfredi will be given his lengthy absence).

| I think they may have held some room back from the off season. Charnley himself has said he turned them down in November to see if things changed at Sale but he changed his mind when they recently came back in for him. He said he played his last game of Union five weeks ago and it was by far his best performance yet he was then dropped and hasn’t had a game since.

Agree with this I think a lot of his errors can be coached and he will learn. His main attributes of speed and the seemingly natural ability to get the ball over the line cannot. If he is good for 25+ trys a year letting in the odd one it's not so bad on the grand scheme of things. Also when a winger makes a mistake it can mean not scoring or letting one in two things that stick in the mind, when it's mot necessarily representative if how they have played over the 80mins.
I don't watch them week in week out so hard to judge them but both are good wingers it's down to applying themselves and taking the opportunity presented to them.from what I've seen Marshall is the one I would take but he has done well against us lol
Think it's good to have charnley back in super league certainly adds to the quality of our backs and adds a threat from deep something we've not had in some time,
