I actually think Powell is another who hasn't been given what could be consituted as a decent run.
He's been in and out of the side (dropped and injured). One week he'll play 6 then he'll be dropped for three games, brought back but playing @ 9. Then he'll be dropped again and the cycle will repeat.
With Hampshire, Powell and even Williams there's one constant and that's Wane will never ever drop Matty Smith. These young and talented lads are all playing 2nd fiddle to a limited player who is one of Wane's special group who will always get picked.
TBF stuff like makes me confident that a new coach wouldn't have a big job on his hands to sort things out. It's almost like the Noble era I.e. you knew there was a decent side in there but it toik a proper coach to bring the best out.

| It will be unforgivable if he leaves due to poor management. The lad is no Sam Tomkins, but he's clearly got plenty of potential.

I agree with that. I think Powell should have produced more since that game but you're right in that he's never really had an extender run in one position. Wanes stock excuse for a bad defeat seems to be Williams on to the bench with Powell starting but then it's abandoned after half a game or so. One constant is that Hampshire doesn't get a crack in the halves unless he truely has no other option.
It's all a bit weird.

Not sure about that e.g Sarginson, Clubb, Flower, Gelling, Mossop, Mickey Mac, Bateman etc aren't "Wigan lads" but I agree there is too much sentiment in the selection/recruitment process. There is a core of players who seem immune from criticism because they've grown up with SW through juniors and family members close to them.
tThey're sometimes forgetting the quality must also be there. Mossop was a classic example, signed because he was a good lad rather than quality (which he's clearly not shown). Also Liam Farrell when he was terrible at the beginning of the season and a penalty machine, was there ever a chance he'd lose his place? Could you imagine Crosby, Powell, L. Tomkins being kept on under Maguire?

I don't think it is. McIlorum, Mossop, Smith, Gelling,Bateman etc aren't Wigan lads and they're getting picked.
There's issues more deep rooted then that with Hampshire you'd have to think. My guess is he doesn't like the fact that he's not eternally grateful for being asked to play in a position he's not totally comfortable in.
Whatever it is there's only going to be one winner and we'll have to wait until Hampshires at another club to see what he's really made of.

The problem to be solved is who provides our kicking game if Smith were to be dropped? For all his limitations I thought he kicked well against Warrington. Does he know that he's actually allowed to run at the opposition line with ball in hand?

That's the conclusion I'm coming too tbh. We aren't quite as bad as the Noble era in that we are likely to finish in the top 4 (we generally didn't under Noble) and I believe we can make finals, but I worry that this is more a reflection of the Maguire era and we are now heading backwards. This is the first year since 2009 that I've felt like it would be a shock if we won the grand final, we've been knocked out of the cup by Cas and Hull KR in the past two years, and we've had two massive losses against Cas and Les Catalans away. That shouldn't be the case with the personnel we have at our disposal. As I've said on one of the other threads, barring a grand final win I'd let Wane go at the end of the year. I think he has been massively helped by a very easy cup run in 2013 which diverted attention away from his inadequacies.

| So essentially the coach has to win a trophy to keep his job, but that isn't enough. It can't be a lucky win, they don't count. It can't be a win when the standard of Super League is poor, they don't count either. The style of rugby has to be good too.
He can't pick too many local lads because that's showing sentiment. He can't pick too many cheap foreign imports because they are stopping local lads coming through.
He must pick the youngsters, except he can only pick those youngsters that WE like. He must beat Saints, but he must also beat everyone else too, because just winning big games isn't enough.
However he must not bottle the big games because winning the little games and running up cricket scores is a waste of time. He must not waste Madge's legacy, but he must do it without the players that Madge had because they no longer want to play for us. He must be passionate about the job, but he isn't allowed to show any passion.
Have you got that Shaun? Come on it's easy. Cos if you haven't we know loads of coaches who can do better.

Not sure if you have noticed but barring a grand final win this season, Wane will have won 2 major domestic trophies from 8 attempts, missing out on the final in 4 or 5 attempts depending on whether we get there this year. It would be 3 out of 4 seasons culminating in neither a CC or GF win. It's a results based job and that wouldn't be good enough for a club with our resources IMO.
It's not like we're unique in that regard either, Saints went through a few coaches before their gf win last year, I can't see Warrington sticking with Smith/Agar if they don't win either trophy this year either. Leeds don't need to worry about it as they regularly win trophies, we should be aspiring to replicate their success over the past 7 years.

Thanks for pointing that out - I hadn't noticed.
Tony Smith is the best coach in Super League. The Warrington owner isn't as stupid as their fans who may be calling for his head.
In both 2011 and 2012 there was a groundswell of opinion in Leeds that Brian McDermott wasn't up to the job, and that finishing 5th in the ladder wasn't good enough for Leeds. Thankfully for the Leeds club such informed opinion wasn't listened to by the Chairman. And might I respectfully suggest that Ian Leneghan won't be listening to the likes of you either.
Shaun Wane has earned his contract by winning the LLS in his first season and the double in his second, and but for a moment of madness would be celebrating a GF in the third. That, in my eyes, qualifies him to have an off season this year. He will be in charge next season whether you like it or not, so get used to it.

| Just returned back from holiday were I watched the wire game, a game I expected Wigan to win. I could not believe the negative comments, I can understand the posts about the poor play, no leadership but the number of posts Calling for the coach out, the club in crisis etc just massive over reaction. Do I want Wigan to win every game? Yes I do but that's never going to happen. The best Wigan teams lost games. I get sick of the moaning if every game does not end with a one sided Wigan win. Let's ignore the unbeaten home form. A new format for the play offs who knows how that will pan out Wigan are still in with a shout, Third in the table no team even the massively overhyped Rhinos has a massive lead in the table. No team has been consistent this year. I expect a reaction from the team tomorrow.
I expect a win.

I want Wigan to win every match they play, but know it isn't going to happen. What I will not accept is a Wigan team playing without passion, pride, determination, skill and toughness. I haven't seen that in far too many games this season. That, to me is the responsibility of the players but to a much larger extent, the coaching staff. If they are not up to the job they should go.

| Even now, plenty of Leeds fans seem to think their coach isn't up to the job, despite their league position. I guess that says something about RL fans in general.
As for Wigan, we started the season very poorly, then seemed to find some form and played some really good stuff. Now, we seem to have lost our way a little. Of course that is a concern. And those on here who said at the start of the season that we were light in the pack appear to have been proved correct. But it shouldn't take too much to fix that.

| Well after going to Newcastle then going to Warrington last week the only thing I am sure about tomorrow is that the traffic on the M62 is going to be a nightmare !
Oh and if Leeds are behind on the scoreboard they will be chirping away at the ref !
