| The exchange rate has been the big factor to date, plus the closing of tax loopholes which gave extra untaxed income to Aussies ('image rights' and others). I think what people have missed is the fact that effect kicked in a couple of years ago, because most SL clubs held onto their already contracted players (Richards, Carmont etc), and oddities like the Storm cap fiasco which let you sign Lima, Finch and Hoffman.
That gave the impression that SL was full of imports, when in fact it was full of players already signed during relatively good times. What's happening now is that those players are leaving and not being replaced, as clubs cannot justify paying big wages for the makeweights that used to fill out squads.
Even during the relatively recent good times, how many genuine NRL stars in their prime played SL? Lyon is the only one I can think of, and like the Storm players their was an odd cause.
I think there's too much doom and gloom on this whole topic. There will always be players willing to play in SL, including some big stars at the end of their careers. There will also always be McGuire's ready to take a SL gig in the hope of making themselves targets for head coach roles down the track. And the fact that clubs are effectively being forced to develop young players is not a bad thing at all.

I have never rated Mcguire but he thrives in the Leeds team the same can be said for JJB, Ablett, Bailey. As for the rest barring Burrows I cant see what they could offer the squad especially in a salary capped sport.
I think that the full blooded contact training was more of a ruse and more mind games from Wane. Unless someone who isn't employed by the club and have seen most training sessions can tell me differently that is what I'm believing
Funny that i wouldnt be bothered about any wigan player.

| Quote: DaveO "I can never understand this point of view from a Wigan fan. It is part of Wigan's history and tradition that it will sign anyone from anywhere. As to you knowing it is to to the detriment of our young talent where does that idea come from? We have always brought through young players which is where the likes of Edwards started. If they are good enough they will get through. I think those running Wigan have always realised the local talent pool can never satisfy all the teams demands and so while its exciting to sign top overseas players I don't think its ever been just a marketing ploy. They are signed to improve the team and to help it win things and in the majority of cases they do.Sport is not a charity and if Wigan can improve the side by signing a player from another UK club or from overseas they will do.
It's a pity, as you point out, the capability to do this is rapidly diminishing.'"
Sorry but I don’t understand your criticism of my post as you seem to be saying much the same thing. I agree that we have always tried to bring on young players of our own, but for the benefit of the team when class players are available overseas, we bring them in when possible. All I said was there was a knock on effect by buying in quality in that it gave publicity and interest to the general public not yet into the sport. My main point was because of the financial state of the sport, and the inept way it’s now run, we soon will lose this news worthy interest to our sport, but I still wish the sport had been big enough to not have needed to have done this in the first place, but we weren’t big enough as a sport, and didn’t always have the young talent anyway.

| BTW, big-name NRL stars are really only newsworthy to RL fans. In that sense the lack of signings from RU is a much bigger deal for the rest of the population. Just look at all the hoop-la when Thomas signed for the Crusaders.

I was pretty sure you were saying signing overseas players was to the detriment of our own home grown young talent. If not sorry I got the wrong end of the stick.
